We are in Perth, loads of work, you can earn $300 a day if you work for someone else with no responsibility. Add that up for a year and it's about $78k, take off the tax and the few weeks of rain in the winter and your down to about $50k (Thats the equivalent of £20k in the UK) If you have kids and only one wage it's not a lot. Work 6am till 2pm in 40 degrees with flies up your nose and in your ears and tell me it's good money!!! No time to spend with kids in pool as you are too knackered after work. Costs the same here to live as at home so no better off except have a pool and big house. Shame there's no family and friends to share it with!

I am the wife! Husband now has tennis elbow due to the fact that they were using bigger blocks so hasn't been able to work since November. Been to 2 specialists, MRI scans, physio nearly every day and it's still not better. We are going back to the UK as soon as we sell the house. We wanted to go home anyway but the work situation finished us off! To be honest, he did like working here, but the flies just did his head in and for me and the children it wasn't ideal as he was always too tired after work to do anything. They do say that you work harder here than at home and theres not the same laugh going on.

hi jo
we're in brisbane and everything you have said it just exactly the same as we feel......it's as if you have been listening to our conversations...... thought we had researched everything before we came......when we think about it we had a better life back in scotland.........we are giving ourselves until the end of the lease on the house to decide whether to stay or go...........the kids don't want to, but if hubby not making enough then we just can't afford to stay......good luck with what you decide to do.

Re: Wanted down under - bricklayers
My OH is working in Sydney CBD, he's a brickie and earns $800 a week which equates to approx 300 pounds a week, which is disastrous. I think the good money is only in Perth! The guys on his site have said that they were all on $200 more a week a year ago, but wages have come down, certainly in Sydney. We are finding it quite difficult financially, although the lifestyle as far as the kids go is so much better. It does seem like we are shelling out left right and centre. They go to a state school or Public School as they call them here. We have just spent $28 for two kids to go into the Swimming Carnival, $170 for our eldest to go on a one night school trip, $85 for him to do a school 3 day drama workshop, $180 for two kids books at school. We have found out my youngest needs glasses, he's only 4 and that has just cost $240. Our average shopping bill is around $200, it is very expensive. If the OH was earning a UK wage, i.e. near enough double as he was a self employed builder, then expenses wouldn't be so bad, but earning the dollar, its much harder than we thought. As he says though, he is prepared to struggle to be able to take the kids surfing after work and be able to watch them being able to play out the front with their mates and the eldest has got into his year cricket team!
I have to say, I find the schooling here, certainly with my sons, to be fantastic and am very impressed with it. The kids work hard, there are so many reward systems and the kids are taught not only the subjects, but about being decent human beings and all the kids I have met are so polite and kids seem to be kids and dont spend their time trying to be cool, they just enjoy life!
For those of you still to come, just be prepared for the cut in wages if you are a brickie and not going to Perth. It really does depend on what you want in life - yes, money does help, but so does seeing your kids confidence grow and being happy! Who knows, that may take its toll once we're bankrupt, but for now things are OK!
