Wanted Down under

As a newbie I just discovered this series and watched a couple of shows while having a few weeks off work, Daytime ****e I like to call it when the wife watches it :D

Anyway got me to thinking it be a good source of info for me and indeed any other people looking to emigrate, what if I could get them all on dvd but it seems there not available :(.
But..... I happeend to mention it to a friend of mine and he said he will "see what he can do" ...........
Lone behold he has come up with the goods all series 1-3 of WDU and the 2 series of revisited I was how we say it ower the moon anyway it never come without a price of course :s but fair play to him he will make it all look nice and shiny like a real boxset he says when he has completed it.

So I have many hours of watching ahead of me to keep me going :)

Regards

Steve

Re: Wanted Down under

I wouldn't recommend taking WDU too seriously. We watched it before we began the process and now we're here and settled, personally I didn't find it a very realistic representation of the emigration process or Australia itself. Was interesting to watch though. We watched a few of the Brisbane episodes a few weeks ago and spent most of the time laughing our heads off.

Re: Wanted Down under

We've been watching WDU too and are just about to set of for Brisbane (in a couple of weeks), can you recall any of the specific parts that triggered your laughter?

I'd be interested to know and I'm sure others would too.

Thanks

The follow up programmes are much better as it filters out those who seemed to be going for a week free holiday v those that were serious.

Prices of houses and land for starters - usually well out of date by the time the programmes are aired.

Like 5 years at least!

They are also guilty of finding people (where do they get them from - there must be an agency) who can be relied on to rouse the fury of every viewer. Keep a stash of things that you can throw at the telly.

If anybody wants to see an episode of WDU or WDU Revisited that is no longer available on the BBC iPlayer site then you can go to www.thebox.bz which is a torrent site specialising in British TV programmes. You should, however, make yourself aware of your ISP's rules and your country's law with regard to downloading such content to your PC.

I think that the quality of these programmes is quite poor though and I'm sure we wouldn't even look at them if we weren't planning to go to Australia. Lateley we watch anything on TV with Australia in it though. I'll be glad when we get there so I never have to see another episode of 'Nothing to Declare' as long as I live.

The only reason I still watch this is to see the houses (and I usually add at least 100k on to whatever price they are quoting!). The whole thing is a rose tinted view of Oz there you'll never have to work, can go to the beach every evening (erm, homework, dinner anyone??) etc but hey, it's a dose of badly needed sunshine and for those of us obsessed with watching anything Oz related, it'll do. Also check out Australia's Deadliest Destinations and Deadly Down Under on Sky 3 to put you off ever leaving the house again!:thumbsup:

Those deadly downunder shows about all the deadly creatures, the snakes, spiders ,sharks, crocs, jellyfish and so on, what those shows don't tell you is that all the dangerous animals in OZ only kill around 10 people a year, the same number of people die in OZ from lightning strikes or falling trees. They should then do a deadly downunder show about the dangers of being hit by falling trees downunder because you are more likely to be killed that way. The real deadly thing down under is cars which kill 1,600 people per year compared to the wildlife killing 10.

Re: Wanted Down under

One thing that is often funny (to me anyway), is the type of house that they show to families on a limited budget, if they will have $300k for a house they show them $500k properties to rub in that "this is what you could afford if you weren't so poor!"

The latest series is putting a date up when stating valuations though so at least you can tell how out of date they are.

I agree, i much prefer the Revisited programmes.

I do sit and go 'OH MY GOD' at some of these people that go on the programme. You can tell from the start that some of them are gona vote UK all the way and i think, why bother?

They pic the homes that can be viewed & filmed on the same day so sometimes budget is wrong, but funny part is they dont tell the agent that you are just window shopping, i thought he was just being a nice chap, after we stopped filming he took me & my family out for dinner as i had said this is the one when asked for my thoughts on the 3 homes. He went for it & got a contract out  i felt so sorry for him as i told him its a tv show about what oz could offer a uk family,

Slightly off topic here but does your husband fit carpets? Would be very interested to chat as we have been looking into starting a carpet business in QLD (it is what we do here in South Africa),If however it was a joke then please ignore my post.

Oh Great ! Thanks ... I was just thinking I might be brave and try not to worry too much about spiders and snakes (I'm ok with the praying mantis and stick insects that regularly sit on my windows :p) and now you've gone and given me a whole load more ****e to worry about ... Re: Wanted Down under

Has anyone seen todays WDU, (fri 27 feb) what a joke, the couple and the small child were as keen as mustard at the beginning and it seemed a challenge for the show to put them off, which of course ruined it from then on.

Between city, coast and country (and at least pronounce Terrigal correctly) they chose country, so then they start showing them houses on the coast an hour and a half drive from where they chose (the country) in this case Mittagong.

The houses, well what can you say, they showed an example during the Australia house presentation of some beautiful houses and showed them, quite frankly, some ugly ones, and one decent one, yes you got it, over their budget.

There are hundreds of thousands of very good houses in Sydney and all over NSW well within their budget, why don't they show some of them????
Many people on this site have complained about the build quality of housing in Australia, remember they are the other side of the world with a completely different climate and differing ideas, have you had a good look at what passes for housing in this sardine can infested country before you criticize.

The lifestyle bit was equally impressive, a flight over Sydney in a seaplane (a typical activity....not) and a visit to a coffee shop when they wanted a cup of tea, yes you can buy a cup of tea in Sydney but not in a COFFEE SHOP.

I lived in Sydney for 17 years and don't drink coffee and have never been on the Rose Bay seaplane and I thought what lifestyle was left over was fab.

They then thought that the wages were not enough, they focussed on the wife doing a hair cutting job, she said they could not afford the lifestyle or housing, no kidding, her husband who was in aviation, what exactly was he going to do, lounge around the house all day!

If I sound angry, I am, not for showing a programme which tries to hijack peoples dreams, but making Australia and its housing, costs and opportunities look bad, they aren't, it is great.

I live in England now for personal reasons that were out of my control, Australia is a wonderful place, but only for people who embrace it.

Good point well said!!! I saw that show, and I too was bloomin annoyed! I am hoping the family stayed on a while and saw what they wanted in an area they wanted to begin with.....
I am also in the UK for unavoidable reasons (temporarily) and cannot bare it when they are so biased......
