Not so keen on the snakes & spiders section! :scared: Rats... the wife hates spiders and we are off to Perth... might have to edit that bit out this evening when we watch it:D |
Re: Wanted Down Under
Just watched the Perth one - although missed the first 15 mins. Thought it was good and thought the family were really lovely :)
Anyone know if they are repeating these? I know Dale would love to see them but I can't get my dvd recorder to work properly cus I've broken the remote control :o |

OK...I thought it was great ENTERTAINMENT........
Look, the family wanted to love it, they were shown great things, great lifestyle and did love what they were shown. Of course everyone who does a reccie (and who eventually move to Australia) have to cut their cloth accordingly.....not everyone has $1m to spend on a house. I'm sure that the remaining 19 programmes will show some people who have a budget of $400-500k for a house and I'm sure there may be families who will choose to stay in the UK. This was the first programme of 20 (there are 20 shows.....checked sky+ and it's on next Monday....with a butcher!) andI'd say the worst thing about it was the fact that 't was given a daytime slot. As for saying that the BBC/Family should have mentioned the fact that the family might have experienced 'jet-lag' etc.!! Might they also have suggested that there's a 'bit of hassle' involved in exchanging £'s for $'s??? Or that it's really 'quite inconvenient' that there's a 'rather annoying' time difference between the UK and Oz? We watched it last night and will tape all the other 19 programmes, we were both disappointed with it but it is daytime tv which is annoying at the best of times, to much repitition and silly bits but it's not an evening programme. Would like a different presenter as well......... It'll be nice to hear all the stories and meet the families that are going through the same thing and how they handle it, I think it may give you different angles on actually doing it and the little things maybe you haven't thought about or have pushed to the back of your mind. The quarantine kennels bit was 'silly' but very interesting to actually see the kennels and see the staff at the kennels it brought tears to my eyes as it makes it more real. |
Re: Wanted Down Under
well rose coloured glassess again.
I wish it was that easy to make all those decisions I think the best thing that was mentioned was that it as to do with quality of life and a better place to bring your children up. We have come along way and have the WWW and its good to talk on the phone as well. 10,000 miles is nothing in this day of age Web cams are a lot better than they were. Yes we would all like 1/2 a million to buy a dream house but we have to be realistic and live within all our means. The families are more orientated to get togethers than nipping down to the local which really apeals to us. A whole new world is out there to explore at a fraction of the cost than here in the Uk. :D |
Re: Wanted Down Under
Today's programme did seem better - pointed out a few key issues such as lower wages, cost of living, property prices etc, distance from friends and family. Not too rose tinted really and a very nice and ordinary (in a good way) family.

Re: Wanted Down Under
What a totally cack programme! How anyone can make such an important decision in a week with no proper investigation first is beyond me. Yes, I know there are people who take the risk of going there having never been there, but I'm sure they'd have looked into it in some great depth.
Showing them all the best bits is a bit one sided. The programme makers seem to have wanted to show that it's just like it is on the telly, where as in real life it's not. What about some of us who don't have £200000 to take to invest in a house? Where could we have lived? Where were the parts about the visa application cost, shipping cost, the grief and stress in applying to move? Or have I missed the point?? |

I think the point is that its entertainment TV. If they showed hours and hours of people filling in forms, and typing their questions into BE:D , it wouldn't make good TV. It IS one sided, but reality TV usually is.Good entertainment, but you have to watch it with a sceptical eye and don't take it as gospel.

To me, the programme was no more than that 'A Place in the Sun', but just with a slight tweak. It's far too one sided and will give peole the wrong impression that all Oz is sea, sand, sun, and sitting on your arse, jobs are easy to come by and yeah, you'll miss your family but you'll get over that. As entertainment, then I agree, it's ok'ish telly fodder. However, from my point, having to struggle my ass off to get my visa and the cost involved to get there it's a sham. (It does make me miss Oz terribly though:( ) |

Even if they gave a (probably) brief overview of costs / timescale involved that would give people more information.

Well they're in for a shock aren't they! Some people need to learn by their own mistakes - don't think you can blame the tv for that. I can't imagine that many people are massively influenced to change their lives by a 45 minute tv programme. I found it quite entertaining, guess that was what they had intended. |
Re: Wanted Down Under
Watched it last night. Mad format (think Nadia whatshername will get very annoying as time goes on) but enjoyed seeing the little bit of Sydney they did show. I think they should have spent less time on the UK bit and a bit more time showing them around Sydney. Also they could have spent less time looking at houses they obviously were not going to buy because they don't have their visa yet, a quick look at them would have done to give them an idea of the type of house they would be able to afford when the get there. Still, its another "Australia" fix, so I'm happy:D

Hi we are the Jones family on WDU I would just like to say that we did do a lot of filming and I can't judge the 2 families that have already been on to how much they have really "edited" the programme but will comment on my own programme when it has been aired. I can point out however that us as a family have done vast amounts of research into Oz since 2001 and only after doing this research decided to start the process in 06. And as for showing the form filling bits/shipping and grief and stress, how do you know that another family will not show this!. I do have to say that we got a lot of positive results from doing the show ie/ my husband knows he will have plenty of work when we do finally move and that is thanks to the BBC and WDU.
Hope you enjoy the rest of the programmes Sarah I Hello Sarah - any news on when your show will be on? :) |
