ok Kaye,
it will soon be january
The tree will be down and a new year will dawn. Christmas is different here, but hey.. its just another day. Look forward to what you and your family will be doing in the new year. Look forward rather than back, see, hear and feel how good your future is.
Happy New year
Ange
ps. its our second year and it has been easier this year!

I'm sorry

What i should have said is

of course it gets better!!!

so they keep telling me

and i have to say i'm sure it does, this feeling and emotion (season) passes fairly quickly, not saying that your homesickness will go. that takes time but feeling shit because of time of year etc etc etc will pass.... it will get better!

Its our 7th and it is still hard, missing family and friends and doing the evenings at the pub then carols in the Church. Sitting by the log fire because its bloody freezing outside, the dark nights and afternoons.Just the build up to Christmas does not feel the same, yes I know that parts of that are good "no crowds in the shops, no feeling forced by the hype to blow the credit card" when there are no children to worry about you tend to just treat it like another day.

Sorry to hear how bad you're feeling.
I know it's not the same but perhaps you could start some new Aussie xmas traditions with your kids.
Hope xmas day turns out ok for you

It's obvious that Xmas is just a reaction to a bigger symptom of homesickness, even after long periods of time for some people. Hence the reason I've been having severe doubts recently about going to Oz.

It is OK for people to say Xmas is only another day etc etc, but when your heart is hurting, reality strikes and it brings it all home to you.

Get really drunk and then you'll be over the hangover just in time for you to miss your loved ones all over again for the new year,

Good Luck

If it makes you feel better I was in tears in Woolies this morning..... Stupid. A silly carol followed by jingle bells with santa being in the back of a ute set me off!!! (Strange but true!)
I am looking forward to tomorrow with my kids and going in the sea, but I just miss being a part of everything going on back in the UK.
This isnt a terribly productive post is it; more wallowing in self-pity.... but at least you know you're not the only one!
Have a good day!

It's just a day. Don't beat yourselves up about it. Tell you what, to cheer you all up, take my family (UK lot) for the day. See what it's like, then next christmas you'll all have a ball loving that you're not there - Sorted

Seriously guys, I hope you have a good one. Try and forget about the UK lot and the too high central heating. Look at what you have, the people you're with and enjoy it.

I so feel the same. I am putting on a brave face for the kids but deep down am dreading waking up tomorrow on Christmas day. We always used to spend christmas day on our own anyway so not sure why i feel like this. We would have the family over boxing day, but its been so unreal this christmas. The build up has been different. I will miss seeing my neice and nephew open their presents and my children watching their nan and grandad open theirs. I will miss the drinking and laughing with friends. I have read some of these threads and oh so hope it will be better next year because up until now i have been fine, coping really well. I would like to wish you all a very happy christmas and lets hope the wine flows freely!!!

Our Christmas last year was a wash out, so this year I have started to try and make some new traditions, things that the kids look forward to doing. I am determined that this Christmas will be one we look back on having really enjoyed it. We have some friends coming over so that should help.

It is easy to miss friends and family, but remember- you are looking back through rose coloured glasses.
It does feel hard, but gets easier over the years and post Christmas- Boxing Day onwards, it is definitely a better place to be. You can get out and enjoy outside things together.

Yes and I am sadly here Christmas morning typing away- out 10 month old daughter woke at 6.30 and is a bit too young to enjoy the real (commercialised) side of Christmas.

I do feel more Christmassy than I have done in years- it is cold and I have a chest infection, which I always had in UK!
