waiting b4 applying for medicare
We went down to the local medicare office yesterday and was told that until we'd been here a fortnight our details wouldn't show up as us being permanent residents and eligible for medicare. Somehow this doesn't seem right to me as if it's done by computer surely it'd of shown up when we entered the country?
Has anyone else been told this or were you able to apply for medicare straight away?
Thanks for any help

We had to wait roughly 2 weeks for our details to be passed from immigration to medicare, but we are in SA, maybe other states take a bit longer!
Hope your daughter's feeling better today, mine were like zombies for about a week, didn't eat much either.

medicare was one of the first things we did when we got here.....certainly in the first week. I was 32 weeks pregnant and so I couldn't hang about....but certainly don't remember anyone saying we had to wait. They gave us a receipt with our number on and then we had to wait a couple of weeks for the actual card.....

Hi
it's supposed to be 10 days min, says somewhere on the paperwork! I arranged health/travel insurance for 17 days when leaving the UK, so that we would still be covered in the interim.
It's something to do with your visa number being activated through certain channels when you've arrived here!

It does take up to 10 days or so
It doesnt make any difference to the care you get
- you can still see a dr you may have to pay a bit but you will be able to claim it back via medicare
- You will be treated in hostipal if you have a car crash etc
- you pay for prescription drugs and do a reclaim
These reclaim things are why there are queues at Medicare offices - they process the reclaims.

Do we need travel/health insurance as well as medicare while travelling around to find a permanent address. We are planning to travel for a couple of months and travel insurance seems really expensive especially if we don't need it.
