Wages NZ?

Anyone have a good guideline as to wages to expect in comparison to uk wages.
Thought that I saw some comment on this before but was unable to find it again.

Basically just trying to find out if I can afford to go/live in NZ. I know that I will not get a wage equal to that which I currently have (before or after exchange rate).

I am just about to enter discussions about wages with a potential employer and do not know what to expect and trying not to get 'taken'.

Currently working in a specialised engineering sector with reliability and performance aspects as a consultant.

Any thoughts or experiences wil be appreciated.

I can't help with the particular occupation. Perhaps you could try nzjobs.co.nz for similar positions and see what salaries are generally being offered.

I'm a town planner and generally positions offer between $45-$60,000 compared with £20-£30,000 in the UK. Unless you are thinking of this as a short term move you will probably be better off generally in NZ as the money you earn goes much further. If you're planning on working for a year and heading back to the UK you will undoubtably be worse off financially than if you had stayed at home. But richer for the experience of course.

I thought that the money would be something along that line.
roughly £1 earned in the UK equating to a similar position in NZ earning $2.

Best save the pennies and look into getting paid in sterling if possible.

Try looking at the purchasing power equivalence calculator on www.gomatilda.com

Thanks,

but more specifically looking for a £GBP to $NZD concerned item rather than how many $OzD you get compared to the rest of the world.

(I know you can calculate it through the GBP to OzD ad then NZD to OzD but you then must allow for inaccuarcies due to the calculation twice over). This did give me some indication of "value" but it is a little bit round about for a straight line. (know what I mean?)

OK but I'm sure you're a resourceful lad...searching under 'international cost of living calculator' on Yahoo brings up a few calculators, eg http://www.homefair.com/homefair/ser...655&toCity=559 which said that if you earn 100,000 in Edinburgh you'd have to earn 65,290 in Christchurch. (Presumably this means units of the same currency.)

Cheers - Don

[QUOTE][SIZE=1][i]....if you earn 100,000 in Edinburgh you'd have to earn 65,290 in Christchurch. (Presumably this means units of the same currency.)

Did a similar thing with the Oz calculator you introduced me to.
the basic salary on the Work permit (Talent category) of 45000 NZD equated to earnings of 21,728 GBP (after calculation and exchange rate considerations).

similarly figures for
30000 GBP equated to wage in NZ equal to 61601 NZD
&
40000 GBP equated to wage in NZ equal to 82,837 NZD
(I should be so lucky!)

Now these figures are based upon the 'matilda' site saying that these are the salary earnings that would be required to give an equal quality of lifestyle.
This does not take account of the readily available fresh produce, cost of a bottle of Budweiser or purchase of a house when comparing one country to another.

Appreciate your help with the search for better information.

Little success!

Checked some of the figures against the additional sites now found and appart from some minor variation due to exchange rates the figures come out much the same.

Therefore according to the online resources a person with a salary of £30,000 GBP in the UK can have the same standard of living as someone in NZ earning £21,794.
Transformed into practical NZ values that would equate to a salary of $68,384 NZD.

(No liability will be accepted for these figures.)

Much better informed now.
Thanks.

(Just have to try and negotiate for that kind of money now!!)
