WA Department of Education, Year 7 to move to High School
 

Finally WA Department of Education have announced that from 2015 they will fall into line with the rest of Australia and have students start High School at Year 7. Link here.

Qld is moving y7 to high school in 2015 as well. I guess the national curriculum has forced uniformity and NSW/VIC would rule ;)

Y8 and Y9 are becoming junior secondary in 2013 with Y7 joining then in 2015.

I think some trial schools are changing earlier though.

I think they were all supposed to go in 2013 but due to budget blowouts with the floods, the state government have put it back to 2015. It means that two of my kids would have toddled off to high school together (even though they are two years apart in age). But they're now going to a school with junior, middle and senior schools so they don't have to go through the graduation process together.

The education system in Australia is a basket case. It's about time there was some consistency across the country.

If we had stayed in NSW my son would be starting high school 2 weeks after he turned 12 as his birthday is in January.

Here in WA he will start high school at 13 under the present system. Don't know the reason for the discrepancy between states or how it affects kids who move from one state to another.

And to add to the confusion a third of Year 7 students in private schools in WA are already in a secondary setting because Catholic and independent schools made the shift in 2008, according to Premier Colin Barnett, quoted in the West Australian newspaper last Friday.

Here WA they have kindergarten, pre-primary and then Year 1 (first year of compulsory school). Kids go from year 1-7 and then to high school.

Not sure what age the children are when they start Year 1. Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

In NSW it's different. The first year of compulsory school is called kindergarten (pupils will be aged 5 or 6 as some parents keep their kids back a year if they feel they are not ready for school) and the primary schools go from kindergarten to Year 6.

No idea what other states do. Is this complicated in the UK ?

Kindy is the first non-compulsory year which is 2 days per week and they start in the year they turn 4 before June 30th. From 2013 the first year of compulsory schooling (Pre-Primary) will be in the year they turn 5 before June 30th. Year 1 is turn 6 before June 30th. Hope that helps.

Total bollocks. If Australian education is a 'basket case' then so is the UK's.
