WA could become 'the next California'

WA could become 'the next California'
Taken from WAToday:
Western Australia may soon become an Australian "California" but not because we share golden beaches and warm weather, but due to its attributes to become one of the world's next economic powerhouses.
WA is in the same time zone as the countries making up 60 per cent of the world's population like India and China, which are expected to undergo the most rapid economic development.
This ideal location means that Australia's economic centre is likely to be pulled west and WA's economy would be included in an international comparison following in the footsteps of California - the eighths largest economy in the world - according to one of the state's most renowned education and businessmen.
University of WA Chancellor Michael Chaney said WA must align its thinking with the increasingly prominent Asian and Indian Ocean regions and seek to optimise its relevance and influence within "the zone's" political landscape.

Re: WA could become 'the next California'
This is far from original thinking and to think these folk get paid for churning out such repetitive material.
The Economist ran a feature article about six months back on much the same theme.
Many things could happen but WA would change to such an extent in order to attatch the state to the Chinese/Asian runaway growth train that the quality of life would be challenged for many.
For me WA is perhaps too one dimensional and remote for it to become truely the next California(whatever that means) and totally unwanted.
And when the boom unfolds as in time it must? Back to the wool on the sheeps back?

I'm just in the process of sticking that story on the UWA home page and was commenting on what a ridiculous statement that was.
California is bankrupt like TE said, massive unemployment and loads of homeless people living in tent cities.

Very much so. Just so laughable when CA is held up as a positive example that we could be like or even worse become.

I think WA should aim higher than California, and try to become the next Greece.

WAToday not too hot on geography then?
I always found in Ca that you could strike up an intelligent conversation with just about anyone at a bar. In Perth you get a blank look unless you bring up the football results. Economic powerhouse? Perhaps. Intellectually equal? DMML.

Viz economic news...Love that! The Albany Passage near the tip of Cape York was once described as the new Singapore - it's now one derelict house and a crocodile.

Steer to parts of LA and you might get blank looks.
