Vote here for your favourite Christmas carol/song
The title says it all. I'm not going to put up one of those poll things as there are too many choices so nominate your favourite and (if you want) the reasons why.
A difficult choice for me but as I said elsewhere I heard John Lennon's Happy Christmas (War is Over) a few times in shops at the weekend so I'll nominate it. Honorable mention to Fairytale in New York and the Band Aid 'Do they know it's Christmas' song (even though it has been done to death it is catchy and the money (some of it?) went to a good cause).

We took our two little ones to the Christingle service at our local church yesterday (oh heck...Mr Bannister will be on here slapping me down then!) and to see all the kiddies holding their candles in a darkened church singing Away In A Manger set me off all weepy!
That's what Christmas is all about isn't it...the kids?
I also love Whams Last Christmas, reminds me so much of the '80's and all that teenage stuff.....happy thoughts!

It is Silent Night ....
I never used to like it then one evening after my late shift at work, I got home and Neil Diamond had a show on the telly.. He sang it beautifully and I really listened to the words.
Now it is my favourite..

Australian Christmas Medley
Dashing thru the bush
in a rusty holden ute
kicking up the dust
eski in the boot
kelpie by my side
singing christmas songs
it's christmas time and i am in
my singlet, shorts and thongs...
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
christmas in australia on a scorching summer day, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle bells, jingle bells
christmas time is beaut oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty holden ute
Deck the shed with bits of wattle
fa la la la la la la la la
wax and gum leaves in a bottle
fa la la (etc)
all the shops are open sundays
fa la la (etc)
Buy your dad some socks and undies
fa la la (etc)

Australian Christmas Medley
Now doesn't that bring out the differences between a 'traditional' Christmas and one in Australia!

Pogues for the pop song.
carols:
"Oh Come all ye Faithful"
Used to love it when the old girls used to sing the descant bit at the end, and were given Paddington Bear stares by the organist (as she hated that sort of thing - it was the only time all year the girls would ignore her).
"Ding Dong"
"The First Noel"
"The Holly and the Ivy"
I won't mention "Once in Royal David's city" as I had nerves for weeks before about the solo.

Here's the NZ version of I've been everywhere man - can't find Lucky's Aussie original but it features lots of place names rattled off at frenetic speed.
I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE MAN
(music Geoff Mack / words Geoff Mack, John Grenell, 1966)
(New Zealand folk song)
Adapted by John Grenell, then known as John Hore, from the original Australian version composed by
Geoff Mack, and made popular by Lucky Starr. Over the years, John has made changes in the list of NZ towns.
Well I was hitching a ride on a winding Hokitika road
When along came a lorry with a high and canvas-covered load
"If you're going to Hokitika, mate, with me you can ride"
So I jumped into the cabin and settled down inside
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand
And I said, "Look, listen mate, I've been everywhere in this here land ...

I am going to print this off and use it as a tick list when we tour NZ sometime!!
Re carol nomination - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen gets my vote just for the the 'let nothing you dismay' line - always makes me feel positive.
And the NYPD choir always send a shiver up my spine and put tears in my eyes so I'll have to go for that - not very original though.
How about the worst Xmas song? - Bloody Slade and Noddy Holder for sure!

My fave is Ding Dong Merrily On High... but only coz i laugh everytime i hear it becasue it reminds me of my music teacher at school who used to sing it in assembly in a really loud, high pitched operatic voice...
