Can someone tell me if this is for real:
http://www.voteconfidence.com.au/

It has to be some kind of wind-up!

Looks like a bit of fun to generate coverage. A bit like the Big Dim Sim in South Melbourne a few months ago.

So, how would you vote about WA ?

Their questions are:

YES. I believe that this great state of ours is in a great state and that the future's so bright i'm off to buy a very dark pair of shades.

or

NO. I believe that this great state of ours is in a hopeless state and that the future's so bleak i'm off to get fog lights fitted to my car.

You should also read "The Recession Story" which talks about confidence.

Well what a numpty that man was......don't fast food sales generally rise during times of recession!

Wasn't there a story in the depths of the GFC about KFC hiring 9000 in the UK?

The old boy obviously wasn't very clued up!

Yes it is for real.

Plenty of ads on radio about it, and on talk back

In what can only be described as a truly unique collaboration, the key players in W.A's media and advertising community have joined forces in an effort to lift consumer confidence across the state.

The goal is simple: to spread the word about all things good happening in the West and restore some of the consumer confidence that keeps everyone in high spirits.

A huge range of material has been produced for the campaign by 303, Marketforce and The Brand Agency, to run across press, radio, television and outdoor.

[...]

The campaign is an initiative of the Glass Half Full Committee, which includes radio stations 96fm & 6PR, Mix 94.5 & 92.9 and Nova 93.7; television stations Channel 7, Channel 9, Channel 10, GWN and WIN; Community Newspaper Group, Rural Press, The Sunday Times and The West Australian; Adshel outdoor media; and agencies Marketforce, 303 and The Brand Agency.

Hilarious!

Meanwhile, in the real world...

Crisis toll emerges as dole claims soar

THE number of people claiming unemployment benefits is rising much more rapidly than shown by the official labour market survey, with the downturn striking the resource-rich states the hardest
....
The Centrelink agency at Woodridge, south of Brisbane, has 2478 people on its books, compared with 1246 last September. In WA, it is the Perth suburbs that have been hardest hit

Unfortunately, in the real world, employers are holding back, not expanding, not employing, because they have heard that things are bad out there, and they will hold back just in case it affects them.

That in itself causes unemployment.

So I guess falling profits isn't a factor then?

Obviously it will be in some cases, but in other cases, it will be simply not wanting to take risks when things may be go downhill.

Some employers would rather hold back, and not take risks until others have sorted the recession out.

It takes a brave person to try to expand when all you read is that things are getting worse.

But that brave person may be the one who makes all the profits when things pick up. Wasn't it Hilton, the hotel guy, who got started in the recession ? He had confidence to do what he did.

Absolutely, building market share during a recession is definitely the way to go for a business that delivers value. However, I reckon that too many of the businesses that have thrived during the boom don't really have a viable business - they're all too dependent on loose credit allowing people to buy rubbish they don't really need.

Hmmm....

Commercial Radio stations
Commercial TV stations
Bus shelter advertisers
Advertising-dependent tabloids

Might their advertising revenues be falling then??

Not as much as they expected....

Projections for Radio advertising revenue in 2008/09 was for a dip of about 4%, television by about 9% and newspapers by 11%.

Radio actually went down by 3.28%, but even then some areas went up.

Commercial Radio Australia data shows total advertising revenue for major city radio stations fell by 3.28 per cent to $633 million in the 12 months to the end of June 2009.

The Sydney radio market suffered the heaviest fall, with revenue dropping by 9.44 per cent to $198 million.

Revenue in Adelaide declined 3.44 per cent to $59.9 million, Brisbane fell 2.43 per cent to $101.9 million, while Melbourne rose 1.68 per cent to $189 million and Perth was up 0.93 per cent to $83.8 million.
Google Australia's advertising revenue however increased by 25% to nearly total the entire Australian radio advertising revenue.
