if you're into nature, wildlife, protecting the Aussie wilderness then the Wilderness Society is always looking for volunteers

Wires is another good one

Check out the local library, they usually keep an updated list of local interest groups. Not sure if you have children but schools P&C groups are a good way into local community. Local Scouts and Gudies are another good avenue. But in general (without kids) look into local library/council office.

I did 3 months volunteer work with the Royal Blind Society down in Sydney once. It was a great way to meet people, and a good way to get "local" working experience.

We saw some of these guys doing their bit along a walk round a harbour bay. Seemed like they were having a good time. How they get on with all those huge spider webs everywhere though! Wouldn't like to walk through one of those even if the spiders are friendly ones.

Thanks for this ABC - just spoke to them and I was impressed at how professional their attitude towards volunteering is - they have vounteers that have been with them (on & off) for over 30 years. Excellent...

They were really good to work with, and you get a proper induction course, which included, at the time, being blindfolded, and then being "shown" around the centre by a blind person.

It was a real eye opener ! or rather... umm .. ahh ....

well, it was impressive
