Once you get your visa it has a validation date on it, normally 1 year from the date you had your police and medical checks.
You and all other members of your family must enter australia and get there visas stamped before this to activate the visas. If you dont they become invalid. Once you have validated the visa you have until the end validation date on the visa to leave and return to australia as many times as you like.
In our case we will be able to arrive and leave australia as many times as we like up until the 17 september 2008.

And once the visa is granted where do we physically send our passports to have the visa attached ?

The Visa is sent to Australia house in the strand (Postal deliveries only) Via registered letter. You need to include also a stamped address envelope recorded delivery for the passports to be returned.
If you have any children make sure the children have their own passports. Also check that the visa number matches the Passport number. We had a problem with ours.

Cheers.
