I wrote my "Got it!" Post the other day and you said then that you were close to tearing your hair out. Just wanted to reassure you that I know exactly how you feel! Our application was pretty straightforward and it's only just been sorted out so even with the Italian delay yours must be in the pipeline surely?
I know it's not recommended by any official channels but personally speaking, a bit of nagging works wonders! Seriously, we would not have our visa now and would have had a completely wasted journey to the UK had we not been in touch with our case officer on an almost daily basis to ask what was going on.
Who is your case officer? You never know - it might be the same one we had (not too bad really but rather thick to say the least ) We literally pushed our case along for the last few weeks, encouraging (read badgering) a case officer who, on a Thursday, "hadn't read her mail that week" etc etc. Honestly, they are the laziest bunch of work-shy b@stards I have ever met and anyone who tells you different is very lucky or working for them!
