Default Victoria wants another million people

The Victorian Government has announced a new population policy. The
Government is hopeful that the Victorian population will reach six million by
2025, and has outlined several strategies to attract immigrants. Young people
from other Australian states, international students and skilled overseas
workers will be the main targets. Meanwhile, New South Wales Premier Bob Carr believes the immigration intake is too high, and is placing too much strain
on the state's infrastructure; Original article by Mark Skulley; The
Australian Financial Review; 22 December 2004;

The Victorian Government has unveiled population targets for the state. There
would be six million people in the state by 2025. Out of this, 1.75 million
people will live in provincial areas. The state wants to lure more migrants
to country Victoria. Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has launched a policy
document called "Beyond Five Million: The Victorian Government's Population
Policy". Bracks said the Government has to plan for population growth. He was
speaking at Melbourne Airport on 21 December 2004 while welcoming a number of
migrant families to Victoria. The families were sponsored by the State
Government; Original article by Darren Gray; The Age; 22 December 2004; page

I presume the population increase is purely for economic (i.e. tax) purposes. The ageing population and small workforce don't generate enough tax revenue to run the state. The state govt want people who are going to contribute taxes, not a million little kiddies who need schooling and mums off work who are going to cost the govt more money for the next 18 years!

Vicious circle tho...how do you fix up the infrastructure without the tax revenue to pay for it?

I'd prefer there was a greatly lower population but here we are in the here and now in a grotesquely over populated world with social attitudes and technologies that will give Australia and some other contries what is probably the most aged society in history.

We (South Australia) 'need 500,000 people' to avoid crisis
