Yes it snows and and it get's bloody cold, but it can also be lovely and warm

They call Melbourne the city of 4 seasons a day

I'm sure many people in Melbourne can back this up, I have been there where it has been 30 degrees in the morning and come 2pm it is raining and about 18 degrees

Yes, Victoria has an Alpine region with some good snowfields - Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Buller, for example. Brilliant that you can be at the snow within 3 hrs drive of inner Melbourne. Not as spectacular as European snowfields tho, but even so, great that you have access to them!

Apparently the first ski slope in the world was in Victoria. Don't know if that's true, but heard it somewhere

Your're not wrong. The Snowy Mountains straddle the NSW/Victoria border.

The ski fields are in the mountains in western Victoria, however during winter in often snows in many other parts of victoria but not enough snow to cover the ground and it quickly melts. It also snows in Tasmania and Southern NSW.
IT can get very cold and wet in OZ in winter its not warm all the time as some people overseas think.

Neat! I really hope it will be snowing lots and lots! We're just about to move out to Melbourne from Norway .. and hope we can teach our kids the art of skiing even though we're in sunny OZ!

Anyone here tried the slopes and the cross country tracks?

Hello,

We went skiing in Mt Baw Baw last year which is the smallest of the Victorian slopes. It was great for kids but is not much fun for experienced skiers; you'll probably want to go to Mt Hotham or Perisher Blue (in NSW) for the best skiing.

Here's some extra info http://www.ski.com.au/resorts/

Regards
Alistair
