Just noticed that Austravel have a very cheap flight offer, see:

There are strings attached, and you are very limited to when you can fly there and back, but if you're not too choosy about dates, you could fly 2 people to Sydney and back from London for £748 (yes, that's the price for 2!). Perfect for validating a visa or just a reccy trip
