Might have to look for 'locally produced' stuff methinks to avoid the plastic stuff..... :D

There are several quite tolerable brands (look for 'Mainland Special Reserve, Extra Sharp', matured for 20 months; it's in a dark reddish-colored packet & they sell it in Safeways - quite edible). If desperate, you can also get Stilton and Farmhouse Cheddar shipped from the UK, but of course the prices are a bit :scared: I bought a half-stilton for Xmas - YIKES!!

The Tassie-made cheeses can be good, too. Also, look out for King Island Dairy Roaring Forties blue - really fab & almost as good as Stilton. Serve warm with Captains table cracked pepper biscuits & a glass of port (you cna buy port casks here!). Again a good Safeway/Coles should have these.

Happy cheese-noshing!

Thanks anya! :)

I heard about the Tassie cheeses. Are there any good soft cheeses too, like brie type stuff?

I'll have to get Cas to forward the info on this 'dealer' of marmite.... ;)

There's a major brand called tasty - and it's not!
In the speciality cheese sections of the supermarkets you can get a magnificent range of weird and wonderful cheeses that would take you years to work your way through.

Anyway, this is now off topic! :D

Promite knocks the socks off Vegemite and Marmite!

Tasmania Brie is outrageously good - creamy and wonderful - best I've EVER tasted.
Try Promite - It kicks Marmite into touch

It is as good as it gets here. Only better Brie I have got here is Brie de Meux from DJs food court. Brie De Meux actually goes soft in the middle and smells like a Brie ought to smell.

Because of the no unpasteurised milk in cheese law Aussie cheese makers have an arm tied behind their back. It doesn't matter for cheddar but a lot of the cheeses are just too bland.

As for vegemite, the Devil's &r5e crust.

Could you repeat those strange words...."tasty cheese" - words rarely used together in Queensland (except under false pretences by rubber manufacturers......) :D

Brie de Meaux is sooo overpowering - (I've not had the DJ's version - just the stuff from Meaux). I liked it to start with - but then it got the better of me.

I think the Tasmanian bries & camemberts are excellent.

(all without vegemite/promite ;) )

see - you haven't had a long stay in Holland :D You could then talk about "young rubber", aged rubber & rubber with carraway seeds. I'm only kidding a quite liked it. Just Edam was trully terrible.

Don't stress SherKhan, Vegimite is owned by an American company (Kraft) anyway, it's no longer an ozzie icon.
