VCE advice needed
 

We went down to melb for hols, partner ends up coming back and being offered a very nice salary package:ohmy: to manage a project.

Problem, well aside from the fact were already one year into a 3 year wait to emigrate:rolleyes:... that aside, education.

Boys 14 and 17, grade 10 and 12 in qld ( january ).

If we move to victoria, the VCE, is from marks in year 11 and 12, but twice I have also been told it takes into account marks from year 10 and if you didnt do year 10 in victoria you are at a severe disadvantage.

Can someone in victoria or education confirm/explain this. Ive done lots of googling but no wiser.

My daughter will go into y10 this year. No disadvantage at all unless your kid wants to complete a VCE subject in year 11 itself (a majority do them over years 11 and 12, so don't worry). It is year 11 and 12 that count.

We moved in September, 2009 and my daughter had just completed her GCSEs in the UK.
She went into year 10 and has just completed year 11. The head of year was very good with her and they went off her date of birth for year groupings and did the same with my other daughter in primary school.

Here's the long answer.

Students get an ENTER http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equival..._Entrance_Rank based on their marks from doing units 3 & 4 of a subject.

Typically, a kid does one subject 3&4 in year 11, and five subjecs at 3&4 level in year 12. One subject has to be English to get the VCE. The ENTER (now called ATAR) is calculated by taking the English plus three top subjects total scores, and 10% of your "worst" results.

A lot of the subjects can be done at 3&4 without having done 1&2. My daughter did Chemistry 1&2 in year 11 but dropped it to do Specialist Maths 3&4 in year 12. Spesh is scaled-up. http://www.vtac.edu.au/pdf/publicati...cofscaling.pdf It's pretty flexible unlike 'A' levels where you finish what you started as changing a subject after a year is suicide.

I don't know why anybody would say you are at a disadvantage if you didn't do year 10 in VIC. Other than if the boys are doing maths or science then I would suggest checking the differences in curriculum between your home state and VIC to check for any differences and arrange some catch-up if necessary.
