Vast cities
I have read that 85% of Australians inhabit 1% of the continent. That is not difficult to believe. Australia must be one of the most urbanised societies in the world with the vast majority of the population living in the largest cities.
However, as for cities, the largest two, Sydney and Melbourne are also very vast. Sydney has an area of 12,000 square kilometres which is almost ten times that of London. So, even though over 4 million people live in Sydney, the city has an average density of 350 per squarekm.
However, my guess is that the vast majority of the inhabitants of the city live in a relatively small portion of the city. Still, is it possible to live in Sydney and live in the middle of a forest or a desert and not to see anyone for miles and miles?

Re: Vast cities
Dont know about Sydney but you can sort of do that in Canberra - not quite a desert but a nice bush city! You dont get "miles and miles" of space but with some of the views you get, it feels like that.
