Vaccinations etc for dogs in AUS/QLD
Having just read the awful story of Toby the Spaniel at Brisbane airport, can anyone enlighten me if dogs need any more vaccinations for things in QLD compared to their usual C5 annual vaccinations.
Is it a matter of checking them regularly for ticks etc ?
I hear heartworm is more prevalent in QLD than other parts of Australia
Thanks.

Hi melaniee
I have a Rottie and live on the Gold Coast. Every year he has vaccination against Distemper Hepatitus Parvovirus & Kennel Cough and also Heartworm Prevention.
We don't live on acreage but I do check him regularly for ticks because they are quite common here. A friend of mine has just lost her dog due to a tick.
What sort of dog do you have?

Don't underestimate the ticks, they kill hundreds of dogs and cats every year - not a nice way to go either

But you still need to check, find the tic and remove it (must get it all, head and pincers too) or the poison is still in the body and will kill within 2/3 days. If you dont check daily and find one straight to the vet if the poisons going round it may be too late even with (VV expensive treatment).
Checking is not such a big problem, takes us about 3 minutes per dog, but you need to check everywhere
