Using a migration bureau
 

We are seriously considering migrating, friends of ours are already engaged in the process. They are using a migration bureau - is this the best way to approach it? We have already passed a 'points test' with one company who offered us a migration booklet - however I know that the Australian High Commission in London also offer a booklet. We want to avoid being conned.

There's plenty of information on the DIMIA website, I suggest using that as your
source. You can buy or download the Skilled Migration Booklet for A$10. I would use
the official booklets, if I were you.

If you think you need an agent, then make sure he's registered -
http://www.themara.com.au has a list.

Depends what sort of a person you are.

Personally I paid 'a lot of money' to an agency who were quite good, but didn't do anything I couldn't do myself given the time and experience. And there's the tale I guess - once you've been through the process you become an expert.

It was worth the money I paid though, to be able to have someone on the end of the phone I could ring up and speak to for reassurance and advice, particularly when there were long pauses between sending paperwork off and receiving replies.

Obviously this was before I discovered this forum - frequented by lots of knowledgeable people who are willing to offer opinion and experience.

Ultimately it depends how much time you have on your hands as opposed to how much money you can invest in your potential future.

I started off using a migration agent but am now going it alone. I feel my destiny is much more secure in my own hands. They take your money and then s**t all over you.
If you use an agent i would suggest using one that posts on here regulary. ie Alan Collett or George Lombard. They both seem like they are very helpfull guys. Wish i had gone with one of them !!!!
