Default Using Fremantle as base to explore Perth & WA

We're going to be spending 7 days in Fremantle in March and hope to use this time to explore Perth and parts of WA

Just wondered what the public tranpsort is like out there and whether it would be advisable to hire a car for part or all of our stay. We are staying in North Fremantle

Also, could anybody recommend 'must visit' places to see while we're out there (Perth/Fremantle/WA) both from a reccie and also tourist point of view

Many Thanks

BD

PS We'll have 2 kids in tow

Kings Park
Fremantle Prison
Adventure world (I think) wild water place
Cahuna Wildlife Park
Underwater world place at Hillarys
Snorkelling with Dolphins at Rockingham

Anywhere is absolutely fab. Can't wait until we get there

The train link to Perth is good, at least 2 an hour, usually more. From Perth train station you can get trains to a lot of places. I think you will need car for part of your visit, some places are hard to get to on public transport. Try
http://www.bayswatercarrental.com.au for cheap rates. Some places are a must see, Kings Park for example. Others are overrated, like Hillarys Boat Harbour, basically a collection of fast food outlets.

Enjoy your trip, you're coming to a great place.

Hi

Public transport is good out here, you can get most places using it - how old are the children though because it may not be fun if they are small and you are having to carry loads of stuff. On the weekends (check with transperth when you get here) a family of up to 5 can travel for the price of $7.90 all day, have a look at this site www.transperth.wa.gov.au

When my parents come they get themselves around from Mindarie (northern subs) to Freemantle quite easily without my help.

But its true some places you may need a car.

HTH

Fremantle is a great base! It's where we went the first time I visited Aus.

Would definitely recommend snorkelling with the dolphins in Rockingham - an awesome experience!

The Maritime museum is worth a visit, but nothing special. I found it a little bit sycophantic particularly towards the Italian community, but that's just my impression.

Don't stay at the Esplanade - very expensive and really not worth the money!

Car rental - go for Bayswater, as above, and ask for the weekly rate and for parking, dont use hotel carpark, but use the $5/day parks by the seaside. Bayswater is easily walkable (5 minutes) from the centre of Fremantle.

In all honesty, seriously consider increasing your length of stay from 7 to 14+ days if you can, because you'll suddenly realise quite how large a place Perth & WA is.
