I spent a long frustrating time looking for cars. If you have money to burn then I suspect the authorised dealers will be good - and there are many of them.
The main area for other dealers seemed to be Victoria Park and along the Albany Highway heading SE out of the city.
In the end we went private and bought ours out of the newspaper from a private seller. And I would do this again - especially if you are buying a nearly new car.
If you think about a two or three year old Honda, Toyota, Holden or Ford there is little that can go wrong after three years. And you should be able to pick up problems. I'm the world's worst mechanic and yet after I'd read the RACV website where they have a checklist for checking the obvious on cars, I felt pretty well prepared.

Get Mitsubushi Magna, they're bulletproof cars, perfect for Aussie conditions, there are always loads to choose from and relatively cheap.
Avoid Holden and Ford if you can.

Do plenty of research before you get here and that way you'll know a bargain when you see one, or know when you're being ripped off!

Knock all the dealers down from the asking price, don't be shy! John Huges wont/can't budge on their prices, but they sell high volumes at slightly lower prices, so a good place to look.

The rest of the dealers have plenty of room to drop and if they wont, walk away.
Be prepared for cheaper priced vehicle to have high kilometres on the odometer. Around 100,000km's on most cars, you'll be looking at a new timing belt which will be at least $300+.
Falcon and Commodores have timing chains so do the VVT-i Toyota's Plus others, but they spring to my mind.
The RAC do vehicle inspections. You can call out one of their mobile inspectors, or take a vehicle to Balcatta, where they inspect them.

Another option..... if you really like a car, book it in for an RAC 'Blue Service' at one of the Auto Service centres and for $135 you'll get a service with a full saftey inspection that will tell you if anything is wrong with the vehicle.
