Question Upon Arrival ?

for those already there.

What would be your top 5 priorities upon arriving in aus/ brisbane

Is there anything that made you think " wish we'd done......." or "glad we brought........." ( hand luggage compared to shipping )

what would you say you think the top 5 would be upon arrival ?

Thanks.

Paul

For me it would have to be that I wished I'd booked my daughter into Kindegarten before I arrived as I had a hell of a time finding one that wasn't full.

Also wished I'd spoken to my Mum about how cold it still was in Melbourne. I'd been looking at the weather forecast on the web but it doesn't really give you an accurate picture of what the weather is really like.

So instead of bringing all my spring clothes in my suitcase I should have packed more winter things as it was freezing cold when I got here.

Regards

Glad I brought -
- Plug adapters UK - Oz - even if only for your phone charger!
- Collection of small ornaments/favourite photos - something that will make the place seem like home, wherever you are
- Originals (not just copies) of certificates from exams, plus employers references
- woolly socks cos the air con is freezing!
- leaflets from UK pills like antihistamines, so the pharmacist can find the closest match, plus my NHS card - made it easier to sign on with Medicare.

Good question:

Brougt a whole suitcase full of files, most we didn't need so felt like a waste, however you never know. Alot were to do with credit history just in case. Glad I brought my CV and references with photocopes, Car no claims bonus stuff, banking info.

Thought about buying a laptop but glad I didn't as using internet cafe's worked well, even for applying for jobs etc. Wouldn't have been able to hook up on a laptop anyway..

Glad we brought UK mobiles and got then unlocked.

Also wish we'd bought more winter clotes cus Adelaide too was cold in July and August.

Should not have brought kids toys as we were too busy anyway and toys (and kids clothes)are really cheap here.

Glad we got a place for son in a school although didn't take it up in the end as lived elsewhere.

Glad we took a list of all our friends phone numbvers as we needed them for support in the first few weeks.

Good point Mash, phone numbers, addresses and email addresses - especially if your email address book is on your own pc and you don't have it at first. Using internet cafes is fine, but you need access to the addresses!!!

Default Top 5

Well we found the most important things to arrange where, our sons child care, secondly a car then somewhere to live as we where placed into an appartment for 2 weeks.

Arranging a Bank Account for the transfer of monies from the UK.

But everyone is different in cases like this. We found somewhere to live, but had so many problems in finding suitable child care, here seems to be very lacking in enough spaces.

Have a good one

Mary

just thought i'd resurface this one, some good replies on here.

Would anyone say a laptop would be a good thing to buy here and take to aus or purchase one when IN aus ?

Looking at going end of this year, so a bit unsure about the import tax.

Thanks

Paul

A rest. After the stresses of emmigrating you owe your body and sanity a weeks rest to get over the jet lag and the emotional roller coaster of leaving the UK.

The laptop question has come up many times before.
