Cool In to the unknown

I am so glad I found this website.

What a great bunch of people use this to share their thoughts and experiences to help everyone.

Just about to start the visa application (points no problem based on my wife as a midwife, etc) and as I described elsewhere I am very nervous about finding a decent paid job as a finance systems specialist compared to what I get paid here in the UK. Yes it will be lower, but I want my oz dollars to be a decent wage to reflect my skills and experience.......if all that fails perhaps I become a house husband !!!

I think we will have about £150,000 profit on our house so what does that buy house wise in Oz (in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney suburbs)..........I am planning on 5 beds and a pool minimum!

Main reason for going is for our 3 young boys (be interested to stike up a chat with "tiredwithtwins"..........I know what you mean)
but it is a big worry that me as an accountant will earn the same as a bricklayer..........apologies all bricklayers, but it did take 6 years to qualify - how long does it take as a brickie ?

What professions are well paid in Oz.......?.........and what does everyone think about this brain drain I here about on the website ?.....are young college leavers abandoning Oz to seek fame & fortune elsewhere because their own country doesn't offer enough ?........what a real shame........

Also, read on here that estate agents out in Oz "coin it in"......so is there opportunity in buy to let........what sort of market is there for this........lots of students for example ?

Have to say that the other main reasons for leaving the UK are:
diabolocal state of everything - NHS, traffic, public transport, weather, asylum seekers, illegal immigrants, drugs, etc etc
expensive housing..........how our kids could afford a house when they get to 20 god only knows.........who wants to borrow 5 times their salary over 30 years ????

But - as people have been very honest it's not all rosy in Oz.....but I guess on balance "better" sums it up.....and for me not raining so much just swings it....talking of which, how are the golf courses in OZ and in perth/melbourne in particular ?

How much does 18 holes cost and is there a decent choice ?

PS.......do all the expats that have made the plunge meet up out there in Oz??.....sounds like everyone would have agreat time if they did.

Hi,
I just read your post and saw you were from West Sussex, we are in Lindfield, Haywards Heath, we are of to Perth 7th Nov I have the shippers coming tomorrow monday at 8 pm so cant really chat, but you can def find a decent house with pool in a good suburb about 25/30 mins from the centre of Perth for that money at the moment, but prices are on the up, cant really help on the job front as my husband is in the commercial flooring game, but if you want to know anything give us a pm, I am sure others will give you advice on the job front who are already there.
A few of us from sussex had a meet up last month, it was great to finally put faces to names, hopefully we can do the same when we are there.
Bye for now
Suz

Sorry mate,
but as my partner isnt as well educated as you, you probably wouldnt want to strike up a chat with me.
I would imagine most brickies on here may take offence at your attitude - I certainly have. I was hoping to get away from this snobbery and class-based attitude, but it appears to be emmigrating along with us.
it may have taken you 6 years to qualify, but any kind of trade is an ongoing learning process - there are more and more legislation based practices to follow; bricklaying is not something you go to college and learn in a year.

Having laboured on for brickies and roofers, jobs which I have thoughly enjoyed as you are both physically and mentally Knackered at the end of your working day.For which I have payed for later on in life i.e back pain, frozen shoulder and arthritic joints,
I must agree with Tiredwithtwins. These are the same people who have helped you make your 150k profit and good luck to you,but tread carefully on here as we are not all as well educated/fortunate as others on this site(some of us are still skint after years of graft) some great folks on this site and also on www.pomsinperth.com.au where there is some hoping to meet up

If you're really after some good advice to let you live comfortably out here, then here's some: get over yourself.

If you're trying to make out that you're so well educated, then learn to spell. It's 'this brain drain I HEAR about'....

Out here we like people for their personalities, far more than their paper qualifications. This is a very laid back country, but if you bring your present 'I'm so superior' attitude with you, then you'll find yourself alone, friendless, and yet another whinging pom who goes back to the UK, blaming Oz for their own shortcomings, because the Aussies will eat you alive.

And if you find this (and the other replies) offensive, then don't bother - you'll never make it here. And, one final point - it's your WIFE who has the points, not you.

Well it looks like the snobbery things already been responed to, all I can say I admire like hell any person who can work outside in this climate, for heavens sake working outside in 40 degrees is hell, look at the building workers here they usually look a good 20 years older than they are.

Houses, you money converts to around $365,000 dollars. 5 beds and a pool in Sydney not unless you want a 2 hour commute. Melb similar, Perth probably quite easy, Brisbane yes you look hard and not too fussy on suburb.

You dont seem to have been to OZ, or you would not list factors such as NHS, drugs, traffic as resons for escaping, expensive housing is hardly an escape if you fancy Sydney either. I think you need a visit to get a more realistic picture. Weather Perth and Melbourne have pretty awful winters and scorching summers.
Golf, pretty reasonable it seems.

You can afford a visit, why not do it?

Is it any wonder some Aussies don't like Poms when they come over with attitudes like this? They bring their big wads & buy houses with little or no mortgage when Bruce Bloggs is still struggling to buy a house in a cheaper area!!

Also, there's no Gap, no Next, no Waitrose. Get Over It!!

I’ll just pick myself up from the floor having been knocked out cold………

First of all – apologies for “upsetting all bricklayers and the like. I wasn’t my intention to come across like a snob but I obviously did and re-reading my note I can see why. I am simply worried that I’ll not find a decent job that I can do

The only reason I have £150,000 profit on my house is because I bought it long ago and house price inflation is rampant in the South. It’s nothing I have done and I’ll only realise that profit by moving somewhere far cheaper. In fact in the eighties I had negative equity which is a great way to start family life hence the struggles now. Four or five years ago this figure was more like £15,000.

Why does everyone think I can afford a visit………….? Did I say I was rolling in it ?

Contrary to what people may think I do still struggle to pay the mortgage and bills especially more so since we unexpectedly had twins. I don’t need to tell people that my wife earns very little here as a nurse/midwife………and she needs to work to help us pay the bills.

I recently struggled to pay a guy £250 (labour only) to re-tile our kitchen (which was a pit and dangerous) and he did the work in a day and I guarantee at that rate he earns far more than I do. Being an accountant doesn’t always equate to being very well off or well paid……I guess everyone has their own struggles.

I agree with whoever said that working outdoors in high temperatures should be well paid…………..so should working some 14 hour days, weekends and nights which is what both my wife and I sometimes do ……and I get zero overtime pay. Not all accountants sit at desks sipping tea for 8 hours.

These are the kind of reasons why we want to seek out a better life and I certainly don’t expect anyone to hand it to me on a plate. Everything I have ever achieved so far I have had to work for same as everyone else.

I have been to Oz before long ago but was not old enough to take note of the things important to me now. I also have relations in NSW and am well aware of how Pommies are treated…………….I have taken abuse sitting on the Hill at the Sydney Cricket ground surrounded by Ozzies but I’ll not slagg anyone off until I really know what people are like. Once these guys got to know me, they could see I was really just like them too.

Again – apologies to you all, but I am no snob, I don’t expect doors to open for me just because I am an “accountant and I try to treat people as I would like to be treated – as a friend who can lend a hand/ear if help is needed, which is kind of what I was looking for on this website.

Thanks to those that have been helpful. If I do get out there, I’ll buy anyone a Tooheys - bricklayer or doctor......suppose I'll be drinking on my own now though !!!!!

Come along people, let's all calm down. Olibeneli has apologised and explained himself...shouldn't we all be embracing the aussie ethic of a fair go??!!! This forum can be an intimidating place until you get to know the familiar 'faces'....:scared:
