Universities - how to apply and do A levels count?
Hi
we have a 16 year old daughter who is currently doing her GCSEs. We are trying to find out about the best options for her now. She wants to go to Uni. It would appear in QLD kids leave school earlier than the UK. We have not decided whether we will be moving to QLD or NSW.
What are the entry requirements for UK kids? Does she need to do A levels, would AS level do? Should she come and do one year in high school now or would she be better staying for one year in the 6th form in the UK?
Also do Universities have an application system like we have here in the UK? Do you need to apply to each one individually??
So many questions,
Thanks for your help

I don't know about QLD or NSW, but can give you the lowdown on SA if it's any use?

Your best option is to start looking at some university websites and work from there.
The best university in Queensland is the University of Queensland. It's the only QLD university in the Group of Eight - http://www.go8.edu.au

what does the group of eight signify, are they meant to be the best?

Some non Go-8 universities are also quite respectable, like Flinders, Macquarie or Tasmania, but the Go-8 ones generally have the best reputations.

Griffiths University on the Gold Coast is also a good university where my brother went.

It's not that well known internationally compared to somewhere like the Australian National University, however.

how important is reputation?
if you find a uni that offers the course that you want and you pass it does it matter where you went?

Employers may well prefer someone who went to a 'better' university (in fact some employers will refuse to even consider someone from the lesser regarded universities).
And if there's any plan to work outside Australia in the future, it makes more sense to go to a university that someone overseas is more likely to have heard of.
Another point to check when choosing any university course, is how well recognised it is by professional and trade bodies in the area concerned. Ideally you need both aspects from a course - good uni reputation in general, and specific recognition from a professional body.
The amount of marketing material put out by a particular university is not a particularly good guide to its reputation. As with anything else in life, caveat emptor.
