Unfurnished rentals...what would one need to buy as a basic minimum?

Hi
Agree with ABCDiamond, its more about what is in than not in! then start again, its the little things that soon add up. We have continued to use Harvey Norman for electrical equipment (always ask for their best price, never pay what they are asking) they do interest free with the Go card (as long as you pay before the interest terms finish).
We always think its best to try and buy quality items first time, then you dont have to pay again and replace them in the next 12 months, but obviously that is only our personal opinion

Re: Unfurnished rentals...what would one need to buy as a basic minimum?
We moved to Bris in July. Initially stayed in a furnished hotel apartment for 4 weeks then moved in to unfurnished rental till our container arrives (which should be next week fingers crossed).
Our unfurnished rental (house) comes with stove, oven, dishwasher and blinds for window. We were initially planning on renting "basics" from places like radio rentals but then got lucky when some colleagues and friends insisted on lending us stuff till we get settled.
Basics for us right now includes:
bed
iron & ironing board & few hangers
kettle
few pots and pans
dishes, cutlery
fridge
washing machine
towels
linen
plastic folding table
chairs
TV
Hope this helps.

Re: Unfurnished rentals...what would one need to buy as a basic minimum?
Hi guys.
Can't believe what happened today! I apologize beforehand for long email...
So, 2 months ago I started to call a few landlords regarding long term rent (from Europe!) and as many of you know, its almost impossible to find long term rent from abroad. Their answer was always the same, "Sorry mate, but you'd need to be here first!".....or "It's too early mate, give us a call a week before and we'll talk again".
I kinda gave up trying to find long term from abroad and booked a motel.
Today I got an email from one of the landlords (of a unit which was at the top of our list!!!) and told us that the unit will be available the day after we arrive! The place is great, we love it (from photos but we have also asked a few friends to check it out and they said they know the place and its all good!), the price is good, central as we want....but obviously its unfurnished....
Now, here's the thing. The landlord said that rent has to start from the 8th. We have a motel booked from the 6th to the 14th. So, its double renting....but!....we would need to buy all the things (beds, mattress, washing machine etc etc) in a that week!!
What do you guys think? Will I be able to buy/get delivered the necessary things in a week....or maybe just a few days? Does this make sense to you? From your experience, how long would it take ye? Am I insane doing this (renting long term) from abroad? Or maybe lucky!?
Sorry guys for all these questions....my mind is racing at 100 miles an hour at the moment. Geez, I sound like a perfectionist, but the logistics are not plane simple here.
After all, maybe long term rent is possible to arrange from abroad! The downside of this is they I cannot do any inspection or antyhing so in a way I am risking, but hey, life is full of risks and the odds look good
Cheers

Not a direct answer, just a tip- buy an cheap outdoor table and chairs to start with then get proper dining set when you settle.
Don't worry about deliveries - we moved in with an air mattress and a basic picnic kit. Camping inside a house isn't too uncivilised.

Does the motel have a cancellation policy?

Yes!!! I would only loose a few bucks if I cancel a few weeks before. Hmmm, maybe I should just stay a day or two at the motel then "camp" in the long term rent?
Cheers

Got to agree with Lesleys, just buy some outdoor furniture that you can use later (Cheapest prices usually Super Amart), then go to Kmart for an airbed about $20-$50 depending on quality. Buy some camping plates, cultery etc (again you can use at a later date), bedding from Homeart, Kmart, Target or BigW, the most important part of the house, a crate of beer from Dan Murphys or 1st choice then your set
This gives you time to have a look around for furniture that you really want and not make hasty decisions that you may regret in the future. We did this when we arrived so have many people that have stayed with us. Good Luck

I bought a queen bed from a charity shop for $15 on Sunday. Needs a minor repair I'll sort out next week.
