Clearly, the people who make these statements are ABSOLUTELY CLUELESS as to the competition for this kind of work.

Never ceases to amaze me to be honest.
I agree, that's a terrible idea to fall back on.

Take my Aussie friends for example. The wife went back to work part time late last year at Coles, shortly afterwards her husband was made redudant. He hasn't found a job yet so they're relying on just her job. She's told me that she keeps asking for about 20 hours a week and is currently only been getting abou 9 hours (used to get the full 20 in the beginning).

Aparently they hired all kinds of new staff after here so now everyone's hours have been cut right down and no one is getting the kind of hours they want or need.

So people might think they can just do whatever, but these jobs are actually hard to come by (surprisingly) and even if you do get them you might find you can't get enough hours to get by.

Unless you have pretty secure work to come to - medical employment for example - I'd stay where you are.

I think things are going downhill fast now in Australia. I met someone today whose partner works in IT. Contract finished in September and has not been able to get a thing since.

Too late for some of us now though. Our flights are booked, our stuff has gone and someone has rented our house for a year

My husband's a welder and we've been in communication with people over there and companies, we think he should be ok to get work but we do understand the struggles we are going to face.

Down Under Paddy, I can verify that people who say they are prepared to do anything, even stack shelves, ARE clueless because I am one of those people.

But before you judge people like me consider where we come from when people like me make those kind of statements.

I have just been made redundant in the UK as the finance company I work for is closing down. I would say I keep in touch with about 40 colleagues (some close friends, most I just hear about on facebook) and of those 40 about 25 have already got other jobs! (And most of the others who haven't are the dreamers who haven't started looking yet as they think the redundancy money will last forever)

So if I know of about 25 people who have walked into other jobs here in the UK, I don't think I can be blamed for thinking I would be able to find
something jobwise in Australia.

But if I'm wrong, then I'm sorry. I suspect the reason a lot of my colleagues found jobs quickly was because they took a big pay drop and similarly I thought if someone (ie, me) is prepared to be paid peanuts in Oz then I would get something.

But the posters already in Oz have found otherwise so I'll have to think again.

I told my wife if I lost my job I would do anything, If I can't get a job labouring or stacking shelves, I will sell my body.
she said,

on a serious note, things are without question much tougher now than even a month ago. we are both sweet just now, but also in jobs that are far from recession proof. my 2 cents? if you have concrete plans, well, go for it and treat every penny you bring as a prisioner.
if you have no firm plans and a steady job, stay put and see how the dice fall.
if things are really bad where you are just now, realise that coming here is by no means a certain solution to your ills.

Yeah I’ve thought about being a gigolo. But when they asked me to send in a picture "preferably unclothed" I realised it wasn’t just about free dinners with bored, attractive single women and an option to walk away if she wasn’t (ok this was in my uni days)...

So many blokes have this opinion! Makes me laugh though, if you hire a female escort *most* men would expect extra's... hire a male escort and it's all about the company!

'Cos I'm worth it...

The nail in the coffin was seeing the average clientele in that Deuce Bigalo movie - probably more representative of reality

Actually you seem to know a bit about hiring female escorts...good for you

Hi All

Have to say I'm worried about the situation.
I'm in my early 30's and only have myself to worry about.
I knew there was a chance of redundancies at myPharmaceutical Company in the UK so started my visa which I got at xmas.

Took voluntary redundancy at xmas, could have waited later to be made redundant but it wasn't guaranteed and I didn't want to miss the package.

Not leaving until June so will be renting flat out asap to save as much as possible and will either move back with parents or rent a room depending if I can get a temp job.

I have a mate in Melbourne and he has a spare room so will not be that expensive but worried that there isn't any temp work whilst I try and find Science work which could also be hard but no going back now.

you are not welcome then. too many options. what we need in this situation is people with kids. families. these are desperate enough that will do anything for a few bucks thrown their way, just to keep the DREAM alive. they should be good for a couple of years until they snap and go home. rinse and repeat.
it's the business model to keep australians on the dole, unions in place, and inept politicians collecting fat pensions.

bloody hell this is really worrying me , i fly out on the 14th Feb , i have given a well paid job up [ air conditioning and refrigeration engineer ] in the uk , and only have £14000 , to try and make it work , my partner and 4 kids are staying until the 7th March , hopfully in this time i may have secured a job , my partner is a pharmacist , she has been online looking at jobs and also through locum agencies , they have told her not to bother applying until she gets over there , i know that the economic climate is not good, but i didnt think it would of been as bad in Australia .

I think its about time immigration took a look at its skills list.

What the hell is going on there, several trades are listed as required Ruddles is waffling away on TV telling us trade jobs are in jeopardy, master builders is saying 80% of jobs will go but Immigration has Skills Shortage.

Only shortage I can see is bloody jobs!
