UK TV`s and VCR`s in OZ

Hi
i have just arrived in Adelaide with my old TV and video recorder that is 7 years old, i cannot use the TV here but have been told that if i buy an OZ video recorder then i can watch my UK tv to watch OZ TV programs, is this correct? Also if i buy an OZ DVD player then am i also able to watch OZ TV programs played through the OZ DVD player?
I do not own a UK DVD player as i wanted to wait until i got here before buying, i would rather not buy a new Video recorder but buy DVD instead but not sure if i can watch my UK TV through an OZ DVD player, nobody here appears to know the answers to my problem.

Thanks Steve.

You can get a UK TV to work thru an Oz video (thats what we do!), but it wont work thru Oz DVD.

IIRC, the problem is with hifi sound. The system your UK equipment uses (Nicam) is
different to that used in Australia. You may find you can get your TV and VCR to
receive a mono soundtrack.

TV programs? As in broadcast? No. DVD players do not have a tuner. You should be able
to watch DVDs though, as long as your TV has composite (RCA) or S-Video in (or a
SCART socket with one of these).

You will never be able to watch broadcast TV programs through any kind of DVD player,
unless it is the type that is a combined DVD and VCR.

No, the audio subcarrier is at a different frequency, so you cannot receive a mono
soundtrack either.

If you use an Oz VCR, you can connect via the A/V jacks and use your UK TV to view Oz
broadcasts, however this is simply using your TV as a monitor so you cannot watch one
channel & record another.
