Would it make you feel any happier if you knew that people *still* use that word in parts...........
Serious footnote - I don't consider myself an ''Expat'' which for me has connotations of the old er, Fish and Chips Brit out overseas... I am in the literal sense of the word but I consider myself a happy migrant - now settled...

Re: uk style fish and chips FOUND IN PERTH!!!!!!!!!!
This has to be one of the funniest posts ive read....wow!
Having now lived in Perth for nearly three years and trying out quite a few so called 'fish and chips' or should i say crap chips?Frozen nonsense and dont get me on the vinegar?! I resorted to making my own chips and bought proper sarsons vinegar. I couldnt hack it any longer with thinking i would get to taste proper chips until i read this post and on the first post i was just about to get into my car and check this place out...the further i read the posts i just got funnier and funnier and i ended up in stitches.
How desperate are we???? More importantly how hard can it be to make fresh chips? With all the Poms around i think we should get on the ball and show em how its done....British stylee. Failing that Ive heard theres a Greek guy that maked fresh chips .....in Melbourne?! A $1000 round trip ....'I'll av 2 portions of chips please, 2 cod, lots of salt n vinegar please, oh and a tub of curry sauce'. How easy can it be?
If i hear one more Perthian talk about day light bleeding savings im going to scream Get a friggin life......

you know what, i just had a thought as well, even if the chippies over here made fresh chips...in WA thanks to the potato marketing board there are only 3 varieties of potatoes to buy and i dont think any of them would make english style chips they are not floury enough
i had some pretty good fish at Cicerellos in Mandurah, probably the best fish in batter Ive had since Ive been here!

As a West Australian born and bred, I'd just like to say that you're talking complete bollocks.
In order to maintain consumer interest in our product category it is essential that we improve our product mix through our variety development program.
A Potato Varieties Commercialisation Group has been formed to coordinate the identification and development of potato varieties for ware consumption in the West Australian market. This group consists of representatives from Western Potatoes and Agriculture WA and is responsible for assessing varieties that show potential for inclusion on our preferred variety list.
For more information on some of the varieties included on our preferred variety list, click on the pictures below. We will be expanding this section in the future as more agronomic information about these and other varieties that may be added to the list becomes available.

Well, you've just been given the URL of the Potato Marketing Corporation of Western Australia; why don't you email them and ask? There's plenty of variety out there; you just have to know where to get it. So go and find out.
Don't bother with the supermarkets; they're not into choice, despite what they claim. Even here in the UK, my local Morrisons only offers 4 varieties of potato.
"Choice" in supermarkets actually means "the same range of products found in every other supermarket", and "a line of brands we will be slowly removing from the shelves as we replace them with our own".
It's a classic supermarket ploy, and it works very well.

Only three varieties available in WA, eh? And all thanks to the villainous potato marketing board? Good gracious! Whatever shall we do?

I know this is not a Fish and Chip place but the only place to eat takeaway around Perth is Alfreds Kitchen in Guildford!!!! Do a search in Google for it.
A few beers in the Guildford Tavern then a lovely Burger with hot chips and some Pea and Ham soup!!!!! I love fish and chips in the UK but if I was in Perth I would be visiting Alfreds Kitchen at least once a week!!!!
Go and try!!!!!

Haven't read all threads, but surely they're the same as here on the GC? if so OMG they're about a million times better than anything that was cooked up and up and up in the UK freshly caught fish, cooked in front of you! just how much better than that can you get?
