Complain to [email protected]. It may not help you directly, but with enough
complaints they might force the police to upgrade their ZX81.

No.

I sent mine roughly the same time and it was only yesterday that I recieved a receipt
along with a note to say it may take the full 40 days from when the receipt was sent.
The cheque has not been cashed.

The whole thing stinks of inefficiency.

I have just had the same problem with getting the Subject Access document from the National Identification Service (applied via the Met Police).

It's worth knowing your rights - by law in terms of the data protection act they are obligated to provide the answer within 40 days - I waited the 40 days and then called and was given the run-around.

I the end I called Scotland Yard and asked to speak to their Data Protection Office and told him I was going to lodge a complaint with the Government's Data Protection Register that they are breaking the law. I also faxed a letter saying the same thing to the Met Police and the NIS - needless to say I had my letter in the mail THE VERY NEXT DAY and even a phone call from the Met Police to ask if everything was to my satisfaction !!!

As I already posted on another thread, I've now lodged an official complaint to the Information Commissioner. This was on advice from both the Information Commissioner and Sussex Police who have both told me to do this. I think the NIS are getting themselves into deep water.

I'm now at 60 days and still waiting.

Do what I did - fax Scotland Yard (where they are based), and send a copy of your fax recorded, and tell them that you have reported them - as I said I then received my Police Clearance the very next day!

Dear Yvonne,
You might want to give them a call; I sent my forms and cheque to NSY and got a receipt for the cheque dated 14th May. I am now expecting my clearance certificate anytime, as 40 days have now lapsed since the date of the receipt.
I would call them, alternatively, has your cheque been cashed? Contact your bank.
Hope this is helpful.

Another option is to complain to your MP. Public servants *hate* it when MPs start
asking questions, especially if they're in the wrong.

Hiya Izzy

The cheque has still not been cashed, but using my initiative and my agents advise, I went to the local Polli station and submitted another request and obviously being done this way, I have a receipt, now I have counted the days and have a big red circle over 31st July, 1st August is when I start my campaign to get the bloody things sent as I am now on a time scale grrrrrrrrrrr

Yvonne, I'm telling you that you don't have to wait - send a fax to the NIS and explain what has happened - tell them exactly what date etc it was all sent, and then tell them you need the reply urgently. I did this and I received my document the next day.

Those of you that read about my problems above might be interested to know that my Police Check report arrived this morning. As if by magic - that's a couple of working days after I filed my complaint with Information Commissioner.

That's the avenue I suggest you take if you find yourselves in the same boat.

The complaint form and procedure can be found at

http://www.dataprotection.gov.uk/dpr/dpdoc.nsf

Click on 'Assessments'

Don't try ringing the NIS on any of their published numbers because all routes end at a recorded message.

Good luck
Nick
