Default UK land line handsets

Do UK telephone land line handsets work in Australia?
Assume UK telephones can be converted for use in Australia through changes to the hardware/ getting a new socket adaptor for the handset when I get there. Please can anyone advise on this thanks?

They are fine. May need a new cable if the house has the old socket 610 http://www.ji.com.au/telecomsplugs/

Chances are that it won't. Easy to get hold of. http://dicksmith.com.au/product/F212...5-rj12-plug-2m

DECT IP phones are cheaper in UK so worth buying if you intend to use VOIP for cheap calls. Plus, you can have a UK VOIP number so that rellies ring UK number to contact you.

It is, however, illegal to plug a telephone which doesnt have the Aussie tick of approval into the network http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_1687

Now there's a surprise.

Obviously not built for Aussie conditions.

(P.S. I like it here, but some of the "standards" make the mind boggle.)

On a more serious note, having looked at telephones for sale on ebay, sellers state that for Oz they will make sure the phone is set to 10 pps (pulses per second apparantly). Wouldn't have a clue what the UK setting is.

That said, seems that other have brought their phone and they work okay.

Pulses is very old. Usually use dtmf nowadays. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual-to...ency_signaling

What's the difference between this requirement and the requirement that anything you plug into a UK socket be BABT approved? Maybe phones complying with the latter need to be softened for UK conditions?

Cheers

That's interesting as our Panasonics don't without the adaptor

They were quite new (bought roughly last August). I think two adaptors might have been in the box so it was a matter of just choosing the one that fitted and plugging it in.
