UK iphone.

Hi all,

Just a wee question for you... has anyone on here had a Uk iphone which is locked for use with 02-uk, then taken it with them to Australia and used it? So, i suppose I'm asking, does it work alright? Is it just a case of getting it unlocked?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Jock.

A phone is a phone as far as I know. Get it unlocked in the UK though. It's cheaper to do there.

The UK iPhone is tied to the O2 network. Apple/O2 will not unlock a phone to be used on any other network in the UK or abroad. You basically have 2 options.
1 - Sell the iPhone and pay off the remainder of your contract.
2 - Perform a "Jailbreak" on the iPhone which will enable you to use any SIM card etc. There are a couple of issues with this:
- You will invalidate the warranty on the handset!
- If you have upgraded to the latest version of software (2.2) you will not be able to jailbreak the phone as Apple have changed the baseband on the iPhone to stop this. Rumour has it that a jailbreak solution will be available in the next few weeks!!

I am in the same dilemma. I took out the O2 insurance though so i may have an "accident" with my phone when i am ready to go!! I'll get a new one for £25 and sell a brand new unit!!! :o

Hi

I have been using an unlocked Iphone on Orange since Feb 08, no problems so far:thumbup:,

I used it LA earlier this year without problem and I fully intend to take it to oz with me (if they don't go out of date before our house sells:curse:)

Cheers

Nice one advertising the fact that you are going to commit insurance fraud on a public forum. I love people like you. They make it so easy to spend lots of money when it's time to pay for insurance.

I don't know what O2 i like but optus here unlocked our phones as soon as we were on a contract. We have to keep paying the contract regardless so thats all they care about. Worth checking with o2 if they will unlock before the end of the contract if you pay it out.

Good point - tell O2 you are going travelling for 3 months and want to be able to use a foreign sim card, but fully intend to return to O2 once you get back to the UK etc etc etc......

Worth a try.

If its the original 2g iPhone (the one with the recessed headphone socket) you can enable it for any sim card quite easily. Do you have a Mac or PC?

If its the 3G iPhone then an unlock is coming out on New Years Day but only if you are running firmware 2.1 or below. If your on 2.2 then your out of luck for now.

Me, I have an original unlocked iPhone which I'll be bringing with me to Oz.
