UK Doctors working in Oz
 

I will be the lead applicant on the application for 190 visa as I get the most points. My other half is a medical doctor currently in occupational health (own business) but we are finding it really difficult to find out what he needs to do to practise medicine in Oz.

He will already have his visa via our joint application and we are not claiming any points for him. But once there he will need to work. Is the area of occupational health well known in Oz.

This is a worry for my other half as he needs to know he will be able to work once there.

Hope someone can point us in the right direction. I have spoken to medical recruitment agencies and they were as helpful as a chocolate teapot lol

Your husband will probably need them to recognise his training if he applies for medical registration as a specialist. There are a few pathways which International Medical Graduates can pursue to get General Medical Registration here, these are detailed on AHPRA's website. http://www.medicalboard.gov.au/Regis...Graduates.aspx

Most people I know find dealing with AHPRA rather drawn out, and just getting the paperwork through the system can take several months.

Having been through the process recently I can tell you its not cheap, takes a long time and is quite frustrating. He will need copies of various documents certified. Stick with it though and you will get through. My employer used a recruitment agency to smooth the whole process so I had it relatively easy (although it didn't feel like it!). good luck

I don't know how it works but we have a Dr here in Port Hedland that is a FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) He is here for a few weeks then goes to Broome for a few weeks then returns back back to Henly On Thames

Hi guys!

I have a few questions id love some answers to!

I am just completing my f1 in the uk and am moving out to oz in october. im trying to apply via the competent authority pathway but im stressing out because i understand i need an amc certificate of eligibility before i can apply for the training posts (1 year supervised training for full registration) and they require proof of gmc registration. i have been signed off etc for full registration but await the paperwork, and of course it will be dated with effect from 7/8/13. given they take weeks to process that, i fear ill miss the dates for national application for training posts (25/7/13-15/8/13).

Is there any way around this? is everyone having to have a year wasted because of this clash in dates?

Will a letter from my hospital saying i have satisfactorily completed my f1 training be any use?

After I competed FY2 I went to the dark side (pharma industry) for a little while, returned to clinical practice and did some locum work in the UK whilst I applied for medical registration here and it took months, from job offer around April time until October 2010. This wasn't helped by the state medical boards merging to form the national board AHPRA, resulting in a novel bureaucratic process to applicants and medical board staff.

Now my interpretation of what you need to do is not good news, and I don't think you'll be able to apply for a physician training job for some time yet. "From 1 January 2013, International Medical Graduates wishing to enrol in a College training program must first complete the AMC Certificate." (http://www.racp.edu.au/page/img-au)

Firstly you need to apply to the AMC to be assessed for the competent authority pathway, which requires evidence of completion of FY1. I feel pessimistic that they would accept evidence of completion prior to the full year being finished (I assume this is in early August?). Perhaps the best way to resolve what is acceptable is to call the AMC directly? When I called them for advice the person who answered my call what really good.

Now even if AMC will accept a letter from your hospital at this stage you would only be eligible for an Advance Standing Certificate (flow chart: http://www.amc.org.au/index.php/ass/apo/cap). You use that to get Limited Medical Registration from AHPRA, then come here work in a 'supervised' job for a year, which is essentially any hospital based job. Once the year is up you submit supervision reports to AHPRA, they tell the AMC you've satisfactorily completed a years work, you pay the AMC more money and then they issue you the AMC Certificate. It took AHPRA over a month from me submitting my reports to inform the AMC that all was good, then a few weeks for the AMC to send my certificate. You then use the AMC certificate to apply for General Medical Registration with AHPRA.

Mental health trainees can apply for retrospective accreditation once they've got General Medical Registration, i.e. get in the training scheme and they will credit you up to 1 years training if you did all the appropriate training experiences / paper work whilst you were on limited registration. I don't know if this is possible for the other colleges.

Add into the mix if you need to use your occupation to get a visa you need a job offer from a hospital who are willing to sponsor you for a 457 visa, immigration will only grant the visa once you have Limited Medical Registration from AHPRA. Once you've been here a year and secured your AMC Certificate you can apply for Permanent Residency as a General Medical Practitioner (this is the bit where you need to do the IELTS test to get points for speaking English!).

Have you checked out the forum on doctors.net? There are threads on there for doctors working overseas and there may be info which is relevant to you.
