UK Cpl Moving to Sydney Jan 2011 - Help!
UK cpl moving on a company sponsored 457 in January...job is in Chatswood.
Any tips/advice from other cpls who have made the move out from UK would be greatly appreciated.
We are planning on selling our UK home.and renting in Sydney........any advice on what is actually worth bringing over would be useful.
Any advice on good areas to live within reasonable distance from Chatswood would be good too.
Any issues bringing our UK electrical appliances? TV's, PCs etc.
Wife will be looking for a good PA/events organiser job....how easy would it be for her to find a suitable job?
Thanks guys

Hi Andrew,
We moved into the Sydney area not quite two months ago. We considered a lot of different places to live, I don't know what Chatswood is like, but in that area Roseville and up to Gordon, Pymble were all on our list and seemed like nice places to live.
As you are selling your house, I presume you are thinking of making this a long term move. Do you have a visa strategy for that? Or were you thinking of selling up anyway?
If you are bringing a container then you should pack as much stuff into it as possible. No point getting rid of perfectly good stuff only to have to buy new once you get here. I only recommend leaving out things like cane and wicker as it can cause problems, delays and costs at immigration.
Good luck.

Thanks Bermuda Shorts and very much appreciated.
How much stuff did you get in your container?
Our problem is that the company are putting us up for a month to find accommodation, and we will not know what where we are moving to after that initial period.
Did you rent furnished?
And if so, did you only pack personal stuff in your container?

I would not have thought anyone would book a container for personal effects only, there are excess baggage type companies that can deal with that.
No we did not rent furnished, we don't need to as we have our container coming. Furnished houses are very rare in and around Sydney and possibly elsewhere in Australia. If you come without furniture, you will be almost certainly buying it here.
As you are a company transfer, they must be paying your removal costs anyway?

Thank you
Yes the company is paying all relocation expenses. Your comments regarding furnished accomm being rare is very useful.....I guess we will need to bring our furniture too.

Bring it! Especially if the company is paying - replacing everything when you get here isn't a cheap option, as well as the hassle and time involved.
