As usual, a bad law - seat use should be based on the size of the child, not their age. My 6yo grandson is too big to fit comfortably into a child seat.

Pay out on what exactly?

The medical costs... If there is 'an at fault' and an insurance company is pursued to repay those costs you are given them a wriggle out.

Yes they need that little tick that makes them safe to use in Australia, without that tick they are a death trap.

Same standard applies in the UK 'cept it is the BSI Kitemark that is required.

But surely the public health system covers all of those?

If there is a car accident and you had the choice of your kid having fully private care - paid for by an insurance company - or the public system, which would you choose? Opt not to buy an Australian car seat and you may not have a choice.

Public, not aware of any private trauma clinics in Australia. All the same doctors anyway.

Post corrected. Not many private policies cover all the cost - you may be out of pocket by many $,000's. The main advantage of private cover is that it allows you to jump the queue, and that doesn't apply to trauma in children anyway.

If you needed emergency treatment you would just go to your nearest trauma hospital - which is covered by Medicare

Nothing to do with a private policy. I am thinking of a badly injured person that might need months of physiotherapy or a wheelchair or round the clock home care. It would be an insurance company who would most likely pick up this bill. If you were drunk, not wearing your seatbelt, driving recklessly or using an unapproved restraint for your child - don't expect them to pay out easily.

eh?

You've got me confused with someone else champ. I was just saying that if you need emergency care just go to your nearest casualty ward and it's covered by Medicare - nothing more, nothing less
