Re: UK or Australia
The OP asked what was an equivalent wage to 50 thousand pounds taking into account Sydney cost of living.
They didn't ask anything about comparison with what anybody else earns or gets by on. It's irrelevant what standard of living they have compared to people earning less or more. They are merely trying to compare with their own current UK situation. BB |

It's closer to $1750 per week, and you could get a decent place to rent for $500 per week, or $2000 per month. That leaves the OP with $5000 per month to pay bills and buy some food.
Not exactly a struggle. Most people would love five grand after rent. Its just my opinion, if you don't like it sorry but thats too bad, no-one said we all had to agree. As an observation its almost impossible to express an opinion on a forum without (unintentionally) offending someone, which is a shame as forums can be so useful. |
Re: UK or Australia
if we knew where they lived and how often they went to the theatre and such then a more informed judgement could be made.
but the point still stands that 125k isnt a bad wage and they wont be skint. |

If its in London/South East then yes I'd say 125,000AUD would be about right, if its earned elsewhere I'd say you'd need a bit more over here to make up the difference. If that offends anyone so be it, nothing I've said was intended to and I've made no reference to my own situation |

And of course it is offensive to refer to a sum of money that is obviously way more than most people earn and imply it is not enough to have a decent lifestyle with. It's bad form and I see it a lot and it irritates me. Also, I do not want to get into the semantics of "luxurious" either. Luxurious could mean literally anything, and it is clear to me the tone of the post implied 125k would be difficult. Which is patently not the case, unless like I said, one thinks rather a lot of oneself. |

Whether you like it or not there are many people who earn this salary and many people who earn more than average salary, you know with it being an average.. Why this means they have tickets on thenselves in your opinion I do not know. It is just a fact of life. Why don't you just accept that we are all different and have different expectations. You keep saying most people would be happy with this just because you would.

There is no getting out if this. It is bad form. The end. One can talk about 125k and its potential, which at 7k per month is clearly well above anything required for a decent life, but one shouldn't imply 7k per month take-home is insufficient when most people get by on much less than this. It's sad this has to be pointed out but we live in very different times now, I suppose. Bragging about cashflow, bragging about home size, implying large sums of money are insufficient, etc. All every day and defended on here under the guise of being practical. |

Re: UK or Australia
Would $500 a week rent in Sydney be in a decent school catchment area? The OP has kids and this may or may nor be a consideration for them. $500 a week in Perth would get you into an OK/decent school catchment area with in 4 bed house.
