Default Types of employment

Can anyone clarify for us if what the muppet in our HR department has thoroughly confused me about

We are told there are 3 fundamental types of employment in OZ.

1. Normal ongoing open ended salaried employment with annual leave and sick pay etc. Called Permanent employee.

2. A fixed term contract (eg 1 yr 2 yrs or whatever) on a salary with holiday and sick pay. Called a permanent contract(or).

3. Hourly paid for a fixed term with a loading in lieu of holiday and sick pay. Called casual employee.

Is this right? In particular number 2?

Default Re: Types of employment

That sounds more or less correct.

However, I'd say there are two types of contractors:

The type mentioned in your post (contracts for a year or longer) are common for senior manager types and particularly University lecturers etc. The pay and conditions are usually good but the employer has an 'out' at the end of the period.

Then there is the IT-type of contract. Where the contracts are shorter (matter of months usually - initially at least) and the pay is a fixed hourly or daily rate with no holiday or sick pay.
