TV/HI FI

Hi People.
Can anyone tell me if UK TV and Hi Fi are compatible in OZ?

I know the plugs/sockets are different but need to know if frequency/Hz/Voltage are the same to enable a Signal.

Mny Thanks.

Mains electricity in Australia is 240V 50Hz same as the UK, and the TV system is PAL/SECAM. TV is broadcast free to air in both analog and digital, but the analog broadcasts are scheduled to be phased out over the next 2-3 years.

UK and Australia both use the DVB-T digital broadcast system, so your TV should work over here - I just don't know whether the channel frequencies are the same.

Hi Fi no problems

TV will work but you may not be able to tune it in to free-to-air and may need a set top box, which is not a big deal because it's not worth watching and most people have foxtel or similar anyway.

Statement of opinion, not fact! There is as much worth watching on free-to-air over here as there is in the UK. With digital there are currently 13 free-to-air channels with another 3 due soon, so why spend money on Foxtel unless you need 24 hour cooking shows or other specialist cable channels?

Unfortunately, your hifi will only play ACDC, Jimmy Barnes, Men At Work and other artists who are claimed by Aussies as being Aussies. Forget playing music from any other nationality.

You will also find that your UK TV suddenly takes on an 'American' accent once you plug it in over here.

And you think that UK TV doesn't have a high percentage of American shows?

The biggest problem for UK expats over here is withdrawal symptoms from Coronation St.

Your hifi will readily play The Seekers, The Bee Gees, Peter Allen, Rolf Harris and that forgettable guy who sang "Shut Uppa Your Face". What more could anyone want?

Incorrect. There's something like 78 free-to-air channels in the UK which is far, far more choice than in Australia.

Not so. I was over there recently and was surprised at how many free-to-air channels there are now - much more than we have. Not that all of it is good viewing but there is a lot of it

And I can remember when we got excited because ITV had started up so we had an alternative to the BBC!

i think if youre tv has a built in freeview decoder that can use the B/G signal then you are ok; i think B is uk and G is oz - could be the other way around though lol, however it it can use both then you should be ok.

But you still need to pay for a tv license in the UK.

What's that got to do with it? The TV licence only pays for the BBC.

Doesn't matter what channels you watch you still need to pay for the tv license so free-to-air is not free to you.

You still have to pay for a TV as well... In both countries.

Who say you have to pay the licence in the UK? Many object and don't pay for it.
