Yes, I did. The organism is 3.5 billion years old and only survives here and 2 other places where the environmental factors don't allow snails to predate them. In Hamelin Pool's case it's the hypersalinity of the water.

I was impressed but I can imagine most people, like the woman in Bill Bryson's Down Under book saying "we came half way around the world to see this!"

The flies here don't seem to be much worse than the ones back in England, if you leave food out they will come in droves, just commmon sense really. The ones on the beach are huge and can bite you though.

The one good thing I think whenever I see a fly is at least they are not any bl**dy wasps here! I haven't seen a single wasp here in QLD and they used to drive me nuts in England. So there is some good news

The flies here in Perth were bad form about the end of October to middle of January, but as the time goes by, you tend to get used to them.

The wasps. I have seen a couple only here, but there was a warning that the European wasp had got here somehow and they were asking anyone that found a nest to report it straight away to eradiacte the problem as it was a nasty little swine.

Oh right, I didn't realise there were no wasps (generally) in Oz.

Not that wasps really bother me. A wasp sting ain't that bad, but they are a nuisance...especially when drinking pop in a glass. They are drawn to the rim of your glass, like a drug.

I think I'm more concerned about the spiders and snakes. However, I ain't concerned enough to let it put me off.

It's the European Wasp that most of us don't like.

And I am happy to say they are not a problem down here.

I've seen a few this year, though nowhere near as bad as the UK.
