Cairns is great I'm really happy here - the people are friendly, the weather is glorious for most of the year - it's wonderful!
But we all have to be realistic - this is the tropics and you do get bad weather and beasties sometimes. It is easy to offset those against all the beauty that surrounds us and that is what makes Cairns a great place to be.

Totally agree, if you do your homework it won't come as surprise..but most of the year round we all have fabby weather and get to see and do some amazing things.

Luckily houses in Ingham have to include living areas which are above the 1977 flood level which means everything built in the last 30 odd years is a highset for this very reason.
We have people on their way to deal with the problems up there, they should be there now. Other agencies, SES and the Defence force are all ready to go but can't do anything until the water subsides.
Just need to make sure that people don't take their eye of the Dengue fever epidemic. One problem at a time.
Oh Is that rain outside That will make a change
In the meantime we watch the low off the coast.

Doesn't look like this sytem will (phew) however the way the season is going I wouldn't take bets against another system developing and bringing some heavy stuff further south.....

Been a LONG time since we had a proper cyclone in Brisbane. We're long overdue thats for sure!
Conventional 'folk' wisdom (i.e. based on public perception on no science whatsoever) - suggests that although still possible, a major cyclone over Brisbane is less likely at the end of summer than the beginning...

As for the current lows imbedded in the monsoon trough they are to close together and with counteract each others development. Rain but no disasters. Conditions currently are just not quite right,
My lawn as grown 6 inches this week. Can it get any worse

If current conditions persist (wind shear prevails in the Coral Sea) not a chance. As soon as a low pressure axis starts to get structure they get blown apart. This has been happening for a few years. The further south you go the more likelyhood there is of this happening.

Does look like staying as a rain event for now, which is not perfect news, but certainly better than it could have been.
Dengue fever is back in the news today - we are monitoring it anyway but it seemed to drop off the public radar a bit.

Meanwhile, dengue fever cases in north Queensland soared over 300 yesterday as warnings about the epidemic were posted on United Kingdom travel websites.
In Cairns, 266 cases of the mosquito-borne disease have been confirmed and another 47 people have been infected in Townsville with new cases emerging in each city daily.
And with shade of Tropical Cyclone Larry....... Banana retail prices are set to rise if the flooded Bruce Hwy near Ingham continues to prevent trucks from delivering supplies to markets.

Any idea what the weather will be like this coming Thursday in the Cairns region? I've looked around on the internet and the general guidance is that it'll be thunder storms for the next 10 days...
How is Cairns airport doing at the moment? Any signs of temp closure?
Thanks.
i'm doing a little 'im coming to Cairns' dance (the reverse of a rain dance!)
