Travel from UK to NZ Christchurch

My son graduated here in the UK in summer 2002 and since August has been working/travelling in NZ - hopefully for a year - and has already made friends with several Kiwis. My wife and I would like to see him in South Island around the Christmas/New Year period. He's currently in Queenstown so we would look for flights to Christchurch I think. Would any kind soul like to suggest best way of obtaining cheap flights and what would be the best stopovers, perhaps - seems Singapore may be best?
Many thanks
Chris and Jane

The Christmas/NY period is the worst time to travel as it is high
season ie: high prices. Many flights are booked out months in
advance.

You may want to check with a local travel agency or phone the airlines
directly. Try the airlines' websites ie: United, Air NZ,
Singapore, Qantas etc.

Hopefully someone may be able to post some urls to online booking
services that offer reduced prices in the UK.

There may be more choice of airlines flying into SYD eg KLM, Thai, MAS etc -
then there are 2 or 3 flights daily SYD-CHC with each of the major carriers
(QF for One World & AirNZ for Star Alliance). SIA stopped its direct
SIN-CHC service but may reinstate it for this summer. Japan might be
another possible routing as there are 2 or 3 direct flights per week from
Japan into CHC.

Chris,

If you are looking for a cheap stop over then I'd make it Bangkok instead of
Singapore. I found a rasonable budget hotel in Singapore cost around $130
per night for a double room but in Bangkok (with breakfast included) it was
$32.
