Default Travel insurance to the UK from Australia

Hi everyone

We are travelling back to the UK for two months at the end of November and wondering what to do about travel insurance. We are permanent residents of Australia, but British citizens, however...we have an eight month old daughter who was born in Australia.

Our major concern with the trip is about whether we could get medical treatment on the NHS for our daugher should she need it while we are away without being charged. We are also unsure of if we could still be treated on the NHS as we have lived in Australia for two and a half years. So with this in mind, do we need to get travel insurance to cover us for more than just luggage, delays, etc?

Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Many thanks

Neil, Emma and Evie-Rose

Universal free treatment on the NHS is only for residents of the UK - as you live outside of the UK you probably wouldn't be eligible. This website has the information.

I had to pay to visit the GP last time I went in the UK - 60 quid!

There is a reciprocal agreement for emergency treatment. I'd still get insurance to cover your banks/cancellation/delay etc.

Some credit cards provide it if you use them to pay for a portion of the trip, like the flights. It's not good cover. I usually go with American Express for travel insurance.
