Default Travel Insurance - which one and for how long ?

Back on-line at last before we eventually fly out to Brisbane on Wednesday and we still haven't sorted out travel insurance. We're having a 3 week holiday on the way over, arriving in Brisbane on the 3rd September.

Can anyone help ??

We normally go with 'Options' for our travel insurance but they only seem to cover you for up to 122 days and you have to start and end your trip in the UK. Does anyone know of any companies specialising in this type of holiday insurance ?

Also, we intend to apply for Medicare once there but how long does this take to sort out and therefore, how many months insurance will we need ?

Any help much appreciated.

Try Go Walkabout. They do one way cover, presumably to suit. Also the Post Office do one way. You have to ring them cos they don't advertise the fact They may not cover you for very long after you get there but I can't remember.

I haven't got there yet so haven't done Medicare but I think you can apply as soon as you get there. Don't think it takes too long to kick in. It has come up many times so you could try a search.

Maybe a daft question but why do you need insurance for longer than a few days,(unless you are on hols) as you fly there then live??

Am i missing a point here?

sorry if so

I tried the Post Office, Duinsure and Walkbout and Walkabout were by the far the cheapest. We will go for the 17 day option to protect us until we get contents insurance arranged.

OK - here's the low down on travel insurance for emigrating families (2 adults/2 young children) based on conversations I've had on the phone and websites I've checked. We have a 21 night holiday (USA/Cook Islands/NZ) before we reach Brisbane :

Post Office - 0800 1699999
up to 17 days cover but only covered for your holiday until you reach Oz.
No good for us as our holiday is 21 nights. No quote obtained.

Go-walkabout.co.uk - 0845 345 0327
up to 17 days cover including time in Oz. On-line quote of £132
Again, not long enough for us.

Duinsure.com - 0800 393 908
According to website - appears you can insure up to 9 months !
on-line quote of £153.90 days for 24 days worldwide. No extra cost came up for one way. Interesting option that if you spend 75% of your time in NZ/OZ, you can go for NZ/OZ cover rather than worldwide which may work out cheaper for longer periods.

Club Direct - 0870 8902 842
Will provide cover for duration of holiday till you reach OZ.
£101.25 quote for the 21 days.

Looks like we might go for Club Direct, however, we're going to investigate the Duinsure prices a bit more tonight.

1.5 days to go !!!!!!!!!!

I have just got a quote for one-way from Insureandgo.com for £41 for a family of 5. It only covers you until you arrive in Oz though. The web site isn't clear on one-way but I phoned and all you do is take the minimum 3 day cover option then your covered.
