Default Transfering money to Oz bank acc?

We,ve newly opened a bank account in Oz, just telephoned our own branch- Bank of scotland to enquire if we could transfer some money to the Oz account we have, which isnt a problem, but they charge £14 to do it.
Does anyone have any cheaper ideas?or is the charge fairly similar at most banks?
We have an Abbey account also so will check with them tomorrow.
Thanx for your help
Donna.

I guess it's a question of how much you are transfering. If it's small amounts then I would imagine you'll either have to pay or you'll get a poor rate of exchange.

If it's a larger amount, say £5,000+, then I'd try someone like www.hifx.co.uk or try a search on 'transfering money' for some other suggestions.

Thanx Chris,
Its just small amounts,£100 + roughly,is it worth it? or should we just hang off & transfer large sum in one go?

I'm no financial advisor but if it were me I would transfer it in larger amounts - if you went with your bank they would charge you for each transaction. So it may cost you £28 to transfer two lots of £100 but only £14 to transfer one lot of £200.

Does that make sense?

Chris

PS So if it were me I would, say, save up a £1000 and then transfer it

Just for information - which bank have you used and how easy was it? We've paid the bond (visa granted last week) and at the moment the interest is going to be sent to us in the UK (we don't plan to go over until Jan 2005). I really should think about opening up an account.

We opened a joint account with Westpac, we emailed them first enquiring on how to open an acc, emailed us back within a couple of days with details & a phone no,hubby phoned them up & opened the acc!(got acc no) they sent us an info pack,we had to send them 2 forms of id-drivers licience, passport etc..(photocopies!) & get it verified & signed(done this with a bank clerk at our own bank)
Sent it on,two weeks later got a phone call at 5.40am to tell us they recieved everything & all info given was fine ,our account was now fully operational,we just got the internet banking details in the other day too.
This to be honest was the first bank we tried & it was easy peasy!
They were also very nice & helpfull to talk to.
It took just under a month to set up & use.

Theres an online firm called www.tranzfers.com They will transfer as little as £50 a time, for a flat fee of £7 (or $15 if you go the other way).
Cheaper way of moving money - I've been using them for nearly a year to transfer stuff to pay bills.
