Just use one of the fx dealers like moneycorp , ozforex.

Transfer in to their account on the day for a chaps payment (£15-30) , or 3 days via bacs.

Based on the amount being transferred the rate will vary, but it'll be with 2c on the interbank rate.

i.e interbank rate was 2.51 (gbp/aud), they will transfer at 2.49 ish perhaps 2.495, while places like thomas cook will be offering 2.34

If you open a bank account with commonwealth, they open an account in london, as feeder account for transfer and an account in aus to recieve money which you activate when you arrive with passport as evidence etc. If you transfer 30 000 or more british pounds there is no admin charge and can use chaps system, so quicker. They also track the interest rate daily to give a competitive rate. Plus if you are pending a house sell etc, you can agree prior to transfer for interest on transfer based on daily rate and they secure it for you.

just a wee suggestion.

sgm-fx is another one. You need to set up an account with them in advance of the transfer, plus you need an Oz account to receive the cash.

I just set up a westpac account from the UK - it took 3 days and was all done by email.
