trains....

Hi,
Just thinking ahead again..
When we set off for Oz we want to spend some time with friends..firstly in Sydney and then possibly to Canberra....finally to Perth.

I can't find any internal flights ( looked on virgin blue..any other internal flight companies??) for that journey...ie the sydney to canberra one...can anyone give me a link
OR can someone tell me what kind of train journey it would be...if it is possible infact. I gather that its about a 10hr drive..is this right????

many thanks for your help

Don't know if it applies to a one way flight to Oz, but certainly with a return ticket, it might be cheaper to book all flights to Oz and internally at the same time, from the UK, in a package, they often do special offers.

There doesn't seem to be too much competition on internal flights, as I found out a few years ago, so prices vary quite a bit.

hope that helps !

Re: trains....

Try looking at www.qantas.com.au - they operate from sydney to canberra. You
can also get the train (takes about 4.5 hours as I remember and costs about
$100 return). With the motorway improvement in Sydney it is now possible to
drive in less than three hours - the journey is less than 300km. Bus costs
$35ish - look at www.greyhound.com.au .

Onward journey to Perth you will need to go Canberra to Sydney or Melbourne
and then Perth.

Hope that helps

Jamie

Sydney to Canberra is not a 10 hour drive!! Its 2.5 to 3 hours if you miss the rush hour! We did it in 4 hours on a busy Friday evening. Do yourself a favour - hire a car and head off early. Its a nice drive.

Re: trains....

As Jamie says, Qantas fly from Sydney to Canberra. He's also correct
to say it's a pretty easy 3.5hr drive on freeway/dual carriageway.

Train information: http://www.countrylink.nsw.gov.au

Bus information: http://www.greyhound.com.au
(there may also be other bus companies on this route)

It's possible to fly Qantas from Canberra to Perth, but you need to
change in Melbourne or Adelaide.

It's also possible to get a train across Australia, from Sydney to
Perth via Adelaide (the Indian Pacific):
http://www.gsr.com.au/

Qantas and Virgin Blue are the only two serious players in the
Australian internal flight market.

I thought the Indian Pacific only went to Port Augusta and
interconnected there with trains from Adelaide and Melbourne....
