Pay depends on where you live, and there are also other things to consider like nurse: patient ratio etc.

I don't find it strange at all that students pay to attend university (including clinical placements) and don't get paid for it. It's not like they are at all useful to the wards while they are students. I definitely don't think it has anything to do with the nurse shortage (which isn't so much a "nurse" shortage as a "specialist, experienced nurse" shortage).

Pay is very similar from what I earned in Melbourne as a critical care CNS to what the US pays for a similar position, and Australia gets a lot more vacation/education time etc. They also have mandatory overtime here.
