WA construction to fall 35pc: BIS ShrapnelArticle from: AAPFont size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment April 27, 2009 07:02am
CONSTRUCTION activity in the WA engineering sector will fall by 35 per cent over the next three years, an economic forecaster has warned.
BIS Shrapnel says the projected increase in federally funded works will not fully offset the fall in private sector construction, leading to a $14 billion drop in overall activity by 2010/11.
But it said lower prices for commodities would hit the former boom states hardest, with construction activity in the Western Australia engineering sector forecast to fall 35 per cent in the three years to 2011/12, while Queensland is set to be down 30 over the same time.
"While private work will jump four-fold from trough to peak, public activity will only jump two-thirds to be just 36 per cent of all activity in 2008/09," BIS Shrapnel economist Damon Roast said.
BIS Shrapnel's report, Engineering Construction in Australia 2008/09-2022/23, said a recovery in engineering construction would start in 2012 or 2013 if credit markets were fixed and major economies emerged from recession.
Engineering activity is forecast to fall by 15 per cent in NSW.
Victoria and South Australia had a positive outlook for activity over the three years, BIS Shrapnel said.
Mr Roast said engineering construction was strong in 2008/09 due to the long lead times for many projects.
"In other words, much of the work now underway was proposed in far rosier economic times and our forecast is that growth over 2008/09 will be about 17 per cent," Mr Roast said.
Engineering construction, particularly in the mining industry, will start to fall this year and keep declining until 2010/11, BIS Shrapnel forecasts.
Mr Roast said engineering construction activity in the private sector nearly tripled in the eight years to 2008/9, with most of the building in new or expanded mines.
With demand for resources slumping as the global economy contracts, new mining projects were now in doubt, Mr Roast said.
"The global downturn and credit issues will decrease private activity by 30 per cent by 2010/11 and this weakness will remain until credit issues are resolved," he said.
Australia's economy would contract 1.4 per cent this year and would grow by 0.6 per cent in 2010, the International Monetary Fund said on April 22.

Good news! Now tradies might have some incentive come on time, do at least a half decent job and charge a fair price. At the moment these pirates come if and when they choose, or not at all, (any "agreement" or promise they make is worthless), spend about 5 minutes doing an absolutely shocking job - worse than anyone with even half an ounce of technical skill could (or would) do themselves, leave a disgusting mess of all their building 'waste', their lunches, wrapping and drink containers, piss on the walls, play their idiot yuk-yuk radios at 10,000 decibels from daybreak to 3.00 o'clock (which is apparently the "end" of a "working" day for these wasters, spend the majority of their time "on the job" walking around in circles talking loudly on their mobile phones while scratching their balls - swearing about either the next job they hope to get or the last one they f***ed up , then tear off down your otherwise quiet street in their noisy highly polished late model 6 litre ute wanker brightly coloured wagons and THEN CHARGE LIKE BLOODY LAWYERS for the privilege of having screwed you like there's no tomorrow!!!! Well, news for you, you educationally challenged societal drop-out parasites - YOU WILL NOW HAVE TO COMPETE with REAL professionals, or you'll be out of a job altogether. THANK GOD. Tell that to your rapidly fattening blond bimbos lazing at home!

I think you will find his remarks are a case of ...........
A stereotype is a phrase relating to all the members of class or set. The term is often used with a negative connotation when referring to an oversimplified, exaggerated, or demeaning assumption that a particular individual possesses the characteristics associated with the class due to his or her membership in it.
Not all Tradies are the same, 1 Chelsea fan may be a thug, dont make the other 44000 in the stadium thugs all so.

What CRAP!!!!
The fact is that over the past decade (or a bit longer), many upstart labourers have labelled themselves 'tradespeople' and commanded outrageous rates.
Electricians and plumbers still have much work. Electrical cable 'layout' tradies, and plumbing 'assistants' still exist, but only the very good are working flat out!
What I've experienced is that the crap workers appear 'out of work'. My list of good tradies still claim to have much work, and I still have to 'book' them long in advance. And, their rates haven't come down a cent.
To me, the hard times appear to be flushing out the crap merchants: thank goodness.
A good honest tradie able to work on short notice is still a rare find.
