Thanks again! Had to add this one which I caught on a quick trip to the bottle shop from home - fortunately had my little camera in the car...

Re: Townsville: Some more pics
Far North QLD.
We took a holiday this week to stay for a few days in Palm Cove, which is approx 30 mins north of Cairns. Did a day trip into the rainforest & another to Port Douglas, another 45 mins or so north. Weather was actually quite variable - had some rain & cloud cover for a few days, so not all sun & sea this time! I guess it is winter & this is the wet tropics (rather than the dry as in Townsville...).
Stayed at Mango Lagoon Resort & Spa (some pics at link below) which was an absolute bargain from ratestogo.com for $160/night for a 2-bedroom, divided (separate entrance after common front door) apartment. They gave us a "VIP" voucher code to share so friends can get the same deal (quote #1830) if booking direct.
Unfortunately, arrived & realised that kids' clothes suitcase left in their bedroom at home. Hmm... only the clothes on their back. Katy (10) very happy to buy 4 days worth of clothes at Myer (no department stores this big in Townsville!)
Overall, a nice trip but 5 hours drive and beaches not *that* much better than Magnetic Island if that's what you're after & travelling from Townsville. Definitely some nice restaurants. Obviously rainforest a different experience, but Paluma Village is only an hour away.

Hey nice picture of the Cairns front - much better than mine! cheers...
[QUOTE=wannabauzzienurse;6515732]Here's one of mine with the Esplanade looking a bit prettier, it's a shame you came when the Lagoon is out of action.

Re: Not Townsville - Daydream Island
As mentioned above, these aren't pictures of Townsville, but we went on a trip to Daydream Island resort last week. It was a 3.5 hour drive south to Airlie Beach from Townsville, then a 10-15 minute ferry trip out to Daydream (aka West Molle Island). The island is only approx 1km in length so you can walk everywhere. Very kid-orientated & great for an introduction to snorkelling & other water activities for the young ones. You can hire a motor boat that seats 4 & needs no boat license to explore the beaches. There are daily trips to outer reef with Cruise Whitsundays.
The beaches are almost all coral, but the water is beautifully clear. Accommodation is not bad at all - we had 2 rooms with a joining door. Long queues for breakfast and although quite expensive, food is OK with a good selection either at the buffet restaurant or a la carte. The kids loved it.
Off Mermaid Beach
Lovers' Cove - for the best snorkelling with coral & tons of fish!
Local wildlife!

Dr Dan,
Thanks for sharing your photos. They are very evocative; I lived in the 'Ville' 12 yrs ago.
If you are working in the hospital there say G'day to my sister-in-law, Sandra; she works in Oncology.
